Fun adventure for beginning players - there's enough encounters to teach the basic rules. As GM, I wouldn't have minded a little more "behind the scenes" information about what's really going on. But, my players had a blast!

Ran this one for brand new D&D players as my first attempt at being the DM. We had an absolute blast! The content is easy to prep for and the players were able to ascertain where and what was needed fairly easily.

Ran this, this past weekend with my three players. They enjoyed the encounters and gameplay. I liked the encounters and the simplicity of the "go to x, find a, bring back to b, then go back and kill all the things" made for a fun few hours.

I have nothing else to say but that this was probably one of the most fun I've had in a while. Content-wise, I didn't really follow through with it because I was more invested in getting the party to know each other and get to know the mechanics of D&D 5e. This is, by far, the best introduction I've made for them, and I'm happy that they're just as invested as I am with the game. So thanks! I'm looking forward to the next three parts of this adventure, and will write a review for them once I get to DMing it for the players :D

This was a nice encounter I stumbled onto as a result of its mention on the D&D site's free content links. My sons & I already play, but I was looking for a way to let my wife try this game we all enjoy. This was a fun introductory adventure, especially as it was easy to add a few NPCs in the town. We now have a farmboy, a bartender, Madam Mayor, and the mayor's husband/assistant. Since the plot itself was pretty simple, but the town was laid out for us, we had plenty of time & space to play with these new characters grown on the fly. Thanks for giving this family an evening's fun together!

The adventure starts from a sort of a mystery but soon turns into a rather dull type of quest sequence: a wizard asks you to go fight monsters in point A, then go fight monsters to bring an item from point B, then go oprionally fight monsters in point C and finally fight the last pack of monsters in point D. There is not much in this campaign other than fighting and no character development happens. We do not get insights about anybody's motives and it honestly is very dificult to care about any of the characters, they seem like mere tools to get some XP.

Having said that, it can be great fun if your DM is an imaginative person who loves to write stuff into premade campaigns or if your party adore fighting so much that most other things are simply not important.

Overall, I would call this a solid adventure; as a newer DM, it had all the important information I needed for encounters and some good information about the setting. There are some details missing, like names of people in the town and almost any information about Fared, and there's not a ton of background info about Chariz either. However, these are pretty easy for a DM to fill in on their own, and I think I got some good practice doing DM improv. Also, this is a free campaign, so I'm not mad that it's not a perfectly fleshed out adventure. My players will be taking on the third adventure in this miniseries, An Urgent Rescue, in their next session, and they're having a lot of fun with the series so far, so that's what's important.

I chose to fit A Chance Encounter into my ongoing campaign as an interesting diversion for the party, but unfortunately I feel that this is not set up for anything but a one-shot.

It's severely lacking in details on who Chariz and Fared are, what the letters mean (you will be asked) and what all the pinned locations in the Myrehall map lead to. If you want freedom for your players, you will need to come up with these answers yourself as they will all come up if they care to explore.

All in all, I did not feel there was enough information up front for the DM. Possibly some of these questions are answered in the sequel adventures, if so then I really needed it here for seeding.

Having said this, I boosted the enemies to match my level 4 party and it ended up being a super tense and memorable battle at the end.

Played with a small group of new players and it was very fun. Easy to digest story and fun way to introduce the chaos that is Koblolds to your new players.

Ran this for a group on Thursday as a one-shot. One veteran player and two newbies, reskinned some things for my world and made them level 2 (plus added another kobold or three because I'm mean). They loved it so much that our third session's about to start and it is... Sunday.

I did find it just a bit hard to follow, but I'm used to homebrewing everything, so that's a problem that probably mostly exists between DM screen and chair. Five stars anyway, because did I mention we've done three sessions in four days?

I ran this adventure for my party and found it very enjoyable. It was solid, despite not having much of a plot, which is justifiable by the fact that the 'chance encounter' drove the party. The NPCs were interesting, and the adventure left room for customization. I would rate it 5 stars except for some small errors that were easy to overlook.

Overall, it was a good, one-shot adventure.

Kristjan Matthiasson's A Chance Encounter is a short, fun adventure for level 1 characters. The storyline is straightforward and in line with many classic fantasy adventures, offering a town, a small dungeon, and a quest-giving mage with opportunity for future adventures while still being a self-contained story. I wish there was more detail about the town, as nothing but the mage is detailed, and the read-aloud text for conversations with NPCs make the adventure feel like a video game with cutscenes, but it gives enough detail that a DM can make things flow more fluidly. It's also worth noting that while the adventure flows relatively well, the layout is minimal and there are a handful of spelling and grammatical errors, though none that detract from the intent of the author.

Overall, if you're looking for a short and sweet adventure that requires little prep and sets the stage for a classic fantasy setting, A Chance Encounter will suit your needs just fine.
