Book of Madness: Whispers Without, Chaos Within
Publisher: White Wolf
by Justin B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/12/2010 22:40:42

Well-written sourcebook on adversaries for Mage: The Ascension. Book of Madness drives home the point that a human being who has sold him/herself out to the powers of darkness is by far scarier than the demons themselves. These evildoers are called Nephandi, and includes both mages who make pacts with demons for power and glory, and ones who are philosophically committed to undoing creation itself.

Also covered are Marauders, insane mages who warp reality around them into their own private universe and are immune to the cosmic backlash suffered by Mages known as paradox, an extensive essay on the nature of Paradox and belief in Mage: the Ascension, and write-ups on a variety of NPCs, mythological creatures, and demonic entities.

Book of Madness doesn't give extensive coverage on how Nephandic corruption affects the different spheres of magic in the game (other than the sphere of entropy); this is handled better in the revised edition of the book.

Sufficiently interesting for reading, though I wonder how playable these ultra-high power archmages would be, though.

Good scan quality.

A good game supplement, for players/gms that want to add a little flair to psionic use.

The Veggie Patch

Good scan job. I don't know if I would have bought it at regular cost (picked this up during the Thanksgiving giveaway), but how can anybody resist an RPG about intelligent vegetables? I thought the characterization of the pumpkin as a "gentle giant" was appropriate. As an apparently one-shot product, it would take a bit of work to run a game (a lot of creativity from the players). I would have liked to see something like this as a D20 supplement.

Traditions Gathered 1: Songs of Science

Good intro to the Sons of Ether, Virtual Adepts, and Order of Hermes. Buyers should note that this book is intended for fans of the original Mage game who want in-depth profiling and history on these 3 magical "orders"; this volume is not required to play the game.

Cautionary note: The historical timeline for the Order of Hermes (scientific, Merlin-like wizards) makes reference to Simon Magus, the sorcerer appearing in the book of Acts in the Bible , in a complimentary tone. In the biblical account, this person was confronted and condemned by the Apostles for his sorcery and for attempting to pay for the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In the few lines of mention in this book, he is portrayed as being misunderstood by the followers of the "magician Jesus".

While I am a fan of fantasy gaming in general (major D&D) and no bookburner, I believe that readers should be aware of the "poor misunderstood pagan" elements present to varying degrees in the Mage: the Ascension game manuals, and think carefully about how to work around these elements (if offended) should they choose to play the game. I own and have read most of the core 2nd edition manual.

Positive - good quality scan

Negative - Some severely demented and disturbing artwork, especially in the Verbena and Cult of Ecstasy segments. While I find the Mage: the Ascension game interesting for the innovative magic system (I own the 2nd edition core manual) and strong emphasis on character development over hack n' slash rpg action, many segments of description in this book fell under the "more than I need to know" category. I wish that I had bought the Dreamspeakers segment by itself and left the other two alone. I have since deleted this book off my hard drive. Honest enough?
