With all the various background information on the British Isles available in several editions and supplementary books, there is a lot of lore about Cainite history here. To me as somebody new to running a WoD campaign, this is a wealth of stories (which I enjoy), but sadly too intangible to be of much help in actually running a game. Cities like London may (in official reckoning) teem with Vampires, but to keep their complex web of of relations straight overwhelms me.

Also, as this book argues, the first Dark Ages edition suggests much lower vampire population counts. Therefore, the cities presented are less densely populated as well. In return, all Cainite inhabitants are fully developed, including full stats and relationship diagrams. Add to this beautifully researched city maps, and a treatise of the background and history that is somehow a few levels more local, more hands-on and more directly related to the Vampires the characters will actually meet, and this book becomes the missing link between the fate of the Kingdom and that of my players' characters. For me, this made the difference between perfectionism paralysis and actually running a game, bridged the chasm between "I want to ST a chronicle here..." and "...and this how I'll do it".

Apart from this rather personal impression, the book also seems very well researched in both actual and White Wolf publication history. The layout and editing live up to the original publications, and the interior illustrations go beyond the usual VtDA stock images by including graphics by Gustave Doré, which I loved.

I mainly have two regrets about this book: That there will likely be no print version (thanks to the author for explaining why in response to a different review), and that the author's next book covers a region that I am not really interested in; I may still get it nevertheless.

So for a WoD book that I actually read cover to cover, and enjoyed for every page... THANK YOU! :D
