Chicago By Night (Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition)
Publisher: Renegade Game Studios
by Lucas D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/11/2022 05:36:32

Great lore and flavour, but all of it is laid out incredibly poorly.

As a Storyteller, I need setting supplements to be easy to parse and reference. If I look at a character entry, I should be able to quickly tell the basics - what other Kindred know about them, what is their current position, whether they're a Neonate/Ancilla/Elder or whatever, where they can be found etc.

I don't think you can actually use this book as reference material when running, but rather you need to read through it, and make your own notes. This largely defeats the purpose of buying a premade setting supplement.

Also, it's 2022 - why would you not include an easily downloadble version of the Chicago map included for VTT play?

The actual writing is solid, and the mechanical additions (e.g. the Spirit of the City) are largely very good. Probably still worth buying if you have your heart set on playing in Chicago, or if you just don't want to make your own city from scratch - as I write this review, there aren't really any other V5 alternatives to this book.

The Sprawl // MIDNIGHT
Publisher: Ardens Ludere
by Lucas D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/04/2021 20:00:17

Straight up the best cyberpunk game available today, and my favourite use of PbtA rules. It's light on crunch, but the use of "tags" for equipment and other assets helps it largely avoid the issue other narrative-focused games have - different assets feeling samey.

The Sprawl allows you to easily have a group of operators with very different skillsets, and allow them to split up and work on different aspects of the mission - all without slowing down the action, boring the players, or overwhelming the GM.

If I was going to name an issue, it would be that some aspects of the game are in slightly odd places in the book, and some could do with a bit more of a simple, coherent explanation. This is especially true for corporation moves, i.e. the way the corporations react to the PCs actions between missions.

It's still a fairly minor gripe, and I'd easily recommend the game as a whole.

Cool little supplement. Like all of my favourite bits of 3rd party content, it's a great resource to get you thinking about the design of your own items, too.

Stars Without Number: Revised Edition
Publisher: Sine Nomine Publishing
by Lucas D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/22/2020 05:32:50

What's there to say that others haven't already? It's a well designed game coupled with straight up amazing GM tools. The revised edition only improves upon the already great core.

The on-foot stuff is solid, if nothing special. It's what you would expect from OSR-in-space. The combat is brief and deadly, and best avoided or circumvented somehow. Psykers are pretty cool. The lethality won't work for every group, but the provided "heroic" rules tone it down, while still keeping things quite deadly.

I'm yet to find better mechanics for space combat. SWN gives everyone something to do, and and makes spaceship combat a genuinely tactical and cooperative experience.

Overall - worth getting, and a steal at this price. It's very suitable for sandboxy, exploration campaigns, and even if you decide to use a different system, the stellar system generation tools will still be useful.

Solid, well-thought-out selection of feats that address some of the big gaps in 5e. Definitely worth picking up - even if you don't end up using them exactly as written, they will definitely get you thinking about custom feat design for your game.

Encyclopaedia Formulae Arcana - C

Just like other PDFs in this series, it's a well-thought-out, comprehensive, and incredibly interesting product. The amount of work that went into it is really impressive.

Strangely, it's even pretty balanced, which is not at all what I've expected from AD&D spells. There are of course plenty of spells that are just curiosities, or very situational, but there's nothing obviously game-breaking in there.

Unseen Masters
Publisher: Chaosium
by Lucas D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/21/2020 11:28:44

My favourite Cthulhu supplement so far. The opening scenario is a really interesting modern-day investigation with some fun avenues and lots of handouts - and it doesn't overstay its welcome. The third scenario is a bit strange, but it also works, and explores some themes you rarely see in CoC supplements.

It's the 2nd scenario that's the crown jewel of this book. It's there that the psychological expertise behind it shines. Without revealing too much, it has produced some of the best gaming moments I've experienced after 20 years in the hobby.

It's an old-school PDF. The quality is firmly 'ok', and there are no bookmarks, but I'm happy enough that this product is even available online that I can't complain too much - it's also cheap enough that such issues can be forgiven.

Small tip: Especially for the first scenario, I really recommend you set it in the 90s, around the time it was written. The presence of the internet and modern forensic techniques complicates things.

Possibly the most ambitious RPG product I've ever had the pleasure to read. The process of creating family history for player characters is LONG, but it's also enjoyable and rewarding - and a great way to onboard players unfamiliar with the setting.

Excellent supplement, which gives much needed diversity and (fun) randomness to the Pendragon character creation process.

Unfortunately, the PDF itself is sub par. At this price point not having the PDF be boomarked is just unacceptable IMO.

Fantastic art, solid and clear writing that sticks to the theme perfectly. Mostly suitable for low-level adventures, but the ideas and art still mean you can use this as idea-fodder for higher-level games.
