A great example of a city/regional supplement for Scarred Lands. Or any setting, really. Just enough information to really immerse your games into the city, while compartmentalizing the books portion of the setting. Seamlessly adds to your Scarred Lands setting when your stories go to this location and doesn't try to add layers on to the setting as a whole by discussing anything outside this little pocket of the setting. A lot more intrigue and cloak & dagger than I was expecting from a book about Dwarves and Giants.

Short and to the point, this title provides a ton of ideas usable as anything from character backgrounds to plot seeds to developing major antagonists. While I think portions of it would have meant more to me if I was personally familiar with Boston, descriptions and concepts certainly give me enough information to develop Boston into a setting that feels distinctive. Certainly, bits could be used to breathe life into side plots and characters from Boston appearing in stories set elsewhere.

This is the sort of thing I could see as part of a series. Cities and locations around the world, mixing local flavor into the Aeon setting.

Scarred Lands Creature Collection (OGL 5e)

What a great book! Amazing nostalgia and update of infamous Scarred Lands critters reborn as 5E. The artwork, design, and overall appearance of the book is as clean and professional as I could even ask for; the book, from cover to cover, conveys a consistent feel and image for the Scarred Lands. Very importantly, the book does NOT waste a chapter on rehashing definitions of game terms related to monsters (or potentially worse...there is no "redefining" or tweaking game rules just for the creatures found within the book). There is literally a splash page with the title artwork, then one page of credits, then one page of Introduction (explaining the page-edge icons), then the monsters start on page FOUR. No wasted space or regurgitated fluff in this book!

Even aside from the book being designed for that setting, it is just packed full of monsters that can appear in any dungeon or campaign. I particularly like the page-edge color-keyed icons: fan the pages just slightly and you can see where in the book the CR16+ critters are....or the critters who primarily inhabit mountains (or whatever other terrain). People who buy the pdf can also benefit from a handful of battle maps at the end; they are full-page and ready to be printed, displayed on a virtual tabletop, or displayed on a tabletop panel. Plus, each battlemap is a different and fully detailed encounter with various nasties in the book.

5/5 for value, 5/5 for content, 5/5 for production.

(Note: I have the PDF and printed version of the book from backing it on Kickstarter. I do not know how the PoD versions look)

Where to start? This was fun, intriguing, and certainly a bit creepy. Most importantly, this book really is useful and inspiring for pretty much every urban fantasy or horror game out there. I know I will be mining it for ideas, and adapting it for my home games.

Chicago By Night (Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition)
Publisher: Renegade Game Studios
by Sebastian F. [Verified Purchaser]

Okay, so I am not a V5 guy. But, Vampire is my thing, the folks at Onyx Path are great, and I have been telling stories about splashing Chicago in blood since the 1990s. So, I needed to at least read this book.

Wow, it really is great. Perhaps I will mine the book for ideas in my games (quite likely, should I have the time), or perhaps I will use it as inspiration for other games. One way or another, there is no way to avoid incorporating some aspect of the book into future games. I was impressed by the mixture of information regarding Chicago the City vs. Chicago the home of lots of Vampires. I thought the storyseeds throughout the book and at the end were just fantastic...there is enough material to keep newbie vampires and their Storyteller busy for years.

Most impressive to me, and the part that I will get the most use out of: the characters. Fantastic on every level! Useful, interesting, they contribute to the setting, the provide even more story ideas, and even the portrait art is amazing.

Based on how good this book is....it is possible that the Blood Gods book just might rope me into playing V5. You hear that, Paradox? Onyx Path is where the soul of this game still lives.

M20 Book of the Fallen
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing
by Sebastian F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/17/2020 07:53:26

It is disturbing, and it is very heavy material to bring into a game. Some expected antagonists are in the book, such as barabbi and nasty spirits, but there is plenty of information on more grounded real-world inspired Evil. The book isn't something a Storyteller will open to use in every game, but when it is time to stop pulling punches and challenge players with a truly despicable antagonist, this book provides.

Very good book!

Side note: Yes, the book carries the authors' personal views about the world. No, none of those views are camouflaged by euphamisms or literary tricks. Yes, it will piss off some of the readers. NO...none of it should come as any sort of shock to anyone who has read any other Mage book (or anything from WW/OPP in the last 20 years+). Love it, deal with it, or skip this book.

Lady Dusk: A Ghoul's Tale

This short story is a GREAT glimpse into a slice of the setting for readers who are new to Vampire and its mythology. Even more amazing, it would serve very well as fiction bits separated through a Toreador Clanbook. Some readers who are not at all new to the game may also enjoy the dramatic delve into the relationship between vampire and ghoul. It certainly demonstrated a number of the game's concepts without being too obvious about "Hey! These are Game Rules in Narrative Format!"

Beckett's Vampire Folio Omnibus

More game fodder than a storyteller can ever really use in a single chronicle!

Plus, it is simply impressive to see the project start and follow through to the end. There may be a few typos or glitches, but the thorough bookmarks to every section and character more than make up for any issues. The fun nerdy side of reading the details in this book is researching and figuring out which details are obscure references to previously published bits ... and what has been improvised and added in to "fill in the blanks".

Between this and Becketts Jyhad Diary, you have everything you need for running stories that jam right into the game's core metaplots.

Great characters, Amazing coterie charts, and overall a very substantial setting to play in.

I love the approach she is taking to Bordeaux...a players guide now, and a book for Storyteller secrets later. I just may have to take a few notes for my own upcoming city sourcebook...

This is quite a handy book to have. All of the ideas are at least interesting and could find a home in most Requiem games, and some of them are very innovative and fun new ways to look at using Devotions.

And it was a fun surprise to see Mercurial Form. That one is a deep cut from way back in the first book I worked on. I like how you tweaked it!

Very cool setting, and the book is just the right mix of rules vs. setting/story. It is not a super comprehensive setting, but as a jumpstart/introduction to the world, it gives a wealth of information. Plenty to start using this book as the basis for a campaign.

I love the insight into the people of Snowhaven more than anything. I don't play 5E for mindless hack & slash, and this book gives a great look at the setting for people who want the urban games of intrigue.

Rose City by Night
Publisher: White Wolf
by Sebastian F. [Verified Purchaser]

From a player's perspective, this is as solid of a City By Night book as any others produced by the studio back in the 90s. Probably more solid than many of those books. It has history, a real sense of what Portland is like to live in, and some compelling characters. I tend to set any of my games in the area that I actually live in, but this book is one of few that would compel me to do something different. This is due, in large part, to the section about Feeding. More than just nifty new rules, the section is there to demonstrate how games in Portland would be unique. The rules can certainly be adapted for use in other settings, but they already feel "native" to the Portland setting.

From the perspective of another Community Content creator, this book is just as valuable. It serves as another example of quality we look for in the Storytellers Vault. Some of us are professionals, some of us are amateurs. Not every title needs to come in at over 100 pages, but we should all be aspiring to deliver a topic as well presented as this book. It isn't about coming up with a masterpiece, using skill developed from dozens of previously published professional pieces. It is about following through and providing a thorough look at the topic we choose to tackle. Rose City does that.

Great book, and was presented very well!

Interesting characters and "odd" or rare character types seem to be natural fits in the setting.

I particularly liked the insight into the language and culture and how the book relates such ideas for use. Words and concepts were not simply translated; they were explained and demonstrated.
