This book was written with the purpose of bringing back the Lupines as the ultimate danger that lies on the outskirts of the city presented in the first edition of Vampire. In order to do that the author distances the Lupines from the more familiar view of the Lycanthrope as presented in Werewolf the Apocalypse, the creatures in this book are no Garou. The book does a good job presenting the Lupines as a credible supernatural threat to vampires, one that is a mixture of bestial savagery with human malevolence. The systems presented for the Lupines make them a credible threat to Kindred but don’t go overboard in making them unstoppable killing machines.

When White Wolf decided to take the Lupines, terrifying monsters lurking outside the cities, from Vampire the Masquerade and created the Garou, savage protectors of the Earth, for Werewolf the Apocalypse they ended up creating something entirely different from that original concept. While the Garou are wonderful beasts to play, they do not evoke that same feeling of horror that the lupines did. This book aims to fix that, and after reading it I must agree that it does!

What you get is a Antagonist splat-book, helping you really build up a Vampire the Masquerade game centered around these monstrous werewolves. In 5 chapters it details:

  • What your players, the vampires, know.
  • How the Lupines work, both mechanically and as a society of beasts.
  • How fighting them should be like. As well as giving you a couple of lupine example characters that can both be used as NPCs or as inspiration.

This book truly succeeds in creating monstrous werewolves with no redeeming qualities. And coming from someone who has mostly played Werewolf rather than Vampire, it really says something when I can safely say I would side with the vampires over the lupines any day! There is genuine horror here, and it fits much better into the world of Vampire the Masquerade than the Garou does.

Are you a Vampire storyteller wondering what the next antagonist in your game will be? Look no further!

Excellent stuff! A briliant starting concept - and an excellent execution, which shows a remakable understanding of the original Vampire - The Masquerade setting / worldview as well as of the relevant game mechanics. By de-emphasising the all-encompassing, all-devouring "crossover" aspect of the World of Darkness and focusing on the in-game perspective of VtM (as opposed to the WoD "in general"), this well thought-out variant brings us back to the original spirit of the first "storytelling game of personal horror".

It is a must-read for anyone interested in running a classic Vampire The Masquerade chronicle - especially at such a low price.

It would also be very interesting to apply the same concept to Mages (or would they be "sorcerers" ?) or to reverse it (re-imagining Vampires as opponents in the context of Werewolf the Apocalypse).

Bravo !
