I found this to a be a very detailed and in depth product that can help give a perspective on storytelling. Some of the suggestions on how to improve your game go a bit deeper than I would normally go, however, as with any rpg product you can draw inspiration from the pages and leave what you feel doesn't work for you. Once again, Secrets to the Masquerade provides us with another amazing product. It provides many tips on creating a long lasting game and a setting that true to real world. It provides tips on handling delicate topics such as religion or politics, which tend to be pervasive in most VTM games. The guide does seem to be designed to help storytellers create games that have the feel of first edition.

We can see where some of the book could be taken as being a little preachy, but overall we enjoyed the book and fits the type of games that we would like to run. We recommend at all storytellers at least take a look at this product.

This is an odd book. Elements of it are very good and practical. Others are gatekeepery, suggesting that if you’re not capable of doing postgraduate level research on your setting you need to sit on your hands.

At the end of the day it’s exactly what it says on the tin: Secrets of the Masquerade presents a guide to running games like she does. Self-limiting and sometimes disagreeable, but a fat sight more interesting than most of the Storyteller’s Vault because it’s focused on praxis instead of shovelling out More Content.

I endorse half of it, disagree with two fifths of it, and wish she’d cut some in favour of more depth for what she actually gives a toss about. Split down the middle, err in the author’s favour for trying to do something different and worthwhile.

I gave this book five stars for very good reasons.

First, the layout, Secrets of the Masquerade has made a commendable job as far as art direction goes, with a mixture of some familiar pieces from previous editions as well as new and exclusive art. It is readable, easy on the eyes and well designed.

Second, the content, the book include a header on the impact of games in our day, as well as a few points on how role-playing games in particular are an excellent tool for fun and education, if done right. It contain some tips on role-playing delicate topics such as religion and politics, which are pervasive theme in a game such as Vampire. There are tips and insight on creating long-lasting and short stories, the structure of a role playing game, and creating a setting that is true to the real places, not to mention a deep look at the psychology of kindred. And a lot more.

Overall, the book is a must have for any ST looking for helpful tips on enriching their games.
