While much shorter this really is probably the best VtM city book I've read. Vancouver being a close second. It creates a nice natrual cold war setting between Cam and Sabbat while having plenty of other factions. The way she deals with Portland being so small is also fantastic. The Adventure in the back is an easy starting point for a long term Cronicle. The next time I run Vampire the Masquerade we will definatly be in Rose City.

There are some slight incositencies in the book which help give a storyteller options. I would also have like to see some visual relationship maps and such as sometimes the motivations are hard to follow.

From a player's perspective, this is as solid of a City By Night book as any others produced by the studio back in the 90s. Probably more solid than many of those books. It has history, a real sense of what Portland is like to live in, and some compelling characters. I tend to set any of my games in the area that I actually live in, but this book is one of few that would compel me to do something different. This is due, in large part, to the section about Feeding. More than just nifty new rules, the section is there to demonstrate how games in Portland would be unique. The rules can certainly be adapted for use in other settings, but they already feel "native" to the Portland setting.

From the perspective of another Community Content creator, this book is just as valuable. It serves as another example of quality we look for in the Storytellers Vault. Some of us are professionals, some of us are amateurs. Not every title needs to come in at over 100 pages, but we should all be aspiring to deliver a topic as well presented as this book. It isn't about coming up with a masterpiece, using skill developed from dozens of previously published professional pieces. It is about following through and providing a thorough look at the topic we choose to tackle. Rose City does that.

Good writing, an immaculate layout, and meatlockers full of cool stuff... RCbN has it all. I most enjoyed the attention to the "blood pressure" of the city: a detailed table of hunting grounds and the difficulty of feeding there and two new skills on handling vitae (didnt think of either before reading this). Also liked that there was a sample adventure at the end - is necessary for completeness in my opinon.

However, my version didnt have a front or back cover, which made me a sad panda :( hopefully a quick update will solve that.

Rose City by Night is an amazing piece work. It details the history and current setting for Portland, Oregon, a city that was in desperate need of a sourcebook. There is a section that expands on how vampires feed, which introduced a few new mechanics which are very interesting and effective. The NPC's introduced are rich but don't overshadow the setting.

The DSC Gaming club recommends Rose City by Night as a must have for any storyteller setting a game in the US northwest.

Extremely impressive, not least because of expanded rules involving Feeding as well as an intricate background for the entire city. The author cleverly left room to fit in NPCs as well as of course Player Characters, while carefully not insisting on exact numbers of Cainites in Portland. That seems left up to Storytellers. Likewise she created a set of situations where Player Characters might fit right in, pretty much regardless of Clan or allegiance. Especially nice is the sense of place, of a city that "feels older than it is" with lots of wiggle room to expand on the backstory we know.

I do think the original artwork she used works better overall than that from the Art Packs offered, while for my taste I wish more attention were included to how the different NPCs interact (on the other hand the "ongoing prelude" throughout gave a very nice hint of such).

Given its sheer size, I cannot but think the author has underpriced her product! Especially since this book really functions as two--one which gives the background of Portland in the World of Darkness but also as an exploration of something that remains integral to vampires yet also under-explored in the game (at least in my experience).

Bravo!

An excellent new setting for the World of Darkness.

Portland, with its scarcity of resources and political distance from other settings, acts as a terrifying new frontier for those looking for a challenge. The sample adventure, "As the Blood Flows" acts as a great launching point into the cities politics, characters, and unique dangers.

Highly recommended!

The 2 new skills and the ritual that are included are a delightful addition as well as the entire campaign book, at over 100 (107 total) pages its quite the bargain for content and its very well written. The material flows easily and is fun to read. As this is a 3rd/Revised title its not very hard to convert either to 20th Edition or even previous versions if your setting uses those systems instead. I give this book my full reccomendation!
