AFF Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2nd Ed

This system is deceptive in its simplicity. Despite the lightness of the rules, the mechanics are elegant, and there is a lot of depth here. There are no classes, but this is not a limitation - you define your own class through Special Skills and Talents. Fighting Fantasy was my first touchstone for RPGs, and also for solo play. I certainly encountered Warlock of Firetop Mountain before D&D... those books led me to D&D, as a matter of fact. And those books also blew my mind. I remember the thrill of seeing the newest one when it arrived at my local bookstore. Citadel of Chaos. Forest of Doom. City of Thieves. Starship Traveller, a sci-fi adventure. And then, probably my fave, Deathtrap Dungeon. I can picture every cover. Absolutely epic moments in my childhood. I play a lot of D&D. I also do a lot of solo gaming and create solo gaming products, and I've tried a lot of so-called "Rules-lite" systems. All of them have something to offer. DCC, Warlock, The Black Hack. They're all awesome in their own way. AFF, however, rises above all these I think. Deep? Yes. Old-school feel? Certainly. And rules-lite? Definitely. It takes you less than a day to learn the rules. And there's not many special rules you have to remember, in addition to the Core Resolution Mechanic. I'd list the extra rules I'm aware of so far thusly.

  • THE MAIN ONE TO REMEMBER: Resolution/attack mechanic - Roll two dice, compare to Skill or Magic + Mods. If the roll is equal or lower, you pass.
  • You can voluntarily test for LUCK.
  • Monsters use SKILL when testing LUCK.
  • Number of attacks for a monster (given in "Out of the Pit") refers to the maximum number of opponents that a creature can fight in one attack round.
  • Invest your spell with a few more Magic Points if you want it to succeed. The Luck test by the target must be modified by the same amount.

The one thing that I didn't find in there was an explicit reference about how to avoid traps, but I thought it was probably the following method: - Avoid Traps = Skill + Dodge. If fail, take 1d6 STAMINA. That's how I've been playing it anyway. Anyway, I know I've rambled a bit, but all in all this is an elegant and deep system which makes for incredibly satisfying gameplay. Can't recommend enough.

I absolutely love this resource, this is my go-to when creating sidekicks for solo adventures. The material is presented in a well laid-out and logical way, and the sidekick classes are interesting without being overpowered. Top notch stuff, and essential content for adventure creators.

If you're thinking of running arctic adventures (which I'm a big fan of as a DM and content creator for DM's Guild), this is a must and will add excellent flavour to your campaigns. There is all sorts of great content in here and it is creative, coherent and well-presented.

A very useful product for DMs and writers. The boons included herein could be granted in many different ways, as part of advancement, or just as random boons bestowed on PCs. I'm using some of these in an upcoming solo (DM-less) adventure called Solo Skirmish: The Cult of Mol'goroz. Excellent work as always, Mr Clegg!

Never Enough Monsters: 20 New Monsters for 5e

Fascinating collection of new and interesting monsters, with great art to accompany. Can't wait to try out the Dzech, possibly as a playable race, and the Gaze Hound looks good. I especially liked the look of the aberrations - suitably nasty. Excellent work, and good to have something like this to surprise your players with (especially those who think they've seen it all!)

These books are an incredible resource. I use these in conjunction with The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox and Mythic Game Master Emulator to create solo (DM-less) adventures for myself in 5e D&D. HOURS of fun. Useful for solo, an absolute MUST for any DM.

Secrets of the Blind Palace

I was fortunate enough to playtest Tal's Coppercoil adventure, so my expectations were high when I bought this adventure. I was not disappointed. I am deep into this with my party, and I have to say the author is going from strength to strength with his adventure writing. This adventure has a lot going for it. Highly engaging NPCs (a mute NPC is who can only communicate with cantrips is a stroke of brilliance), great location, engaging storyline and much more. We are currently 4 hours into this adventure. I have been adding encounters to set up the next storyline, but even so, there is enough here to keep a party engaged for 2 x 4 hours session AT LEAST. This is an outstanding quest, engaging and easy for a DM to get to grips with, involving minimal prep. HIGHLY recommend.

Art for your Adventures Set 5

Once again Mr Pullen has provided a pack of outstanding art for DMs and creators alike. The quality is high, and I'd have to say this pack exceeds all previous efforts (although they are all worth purchasing as well). This is an excellent addition to the art resources available to creators and should be on your list if you are interested in stock art. Outstanding stuff Patrick. I can see this gracing many covers, including my own, in the near future! 5 stars.

Unearthed Tips and Tricks: Volume I

Fantastic product, well worth the price. I write solo adventures for D&D and I'm looking forward to incorporating some of the encounters and magic items in my products. Also, as a DM, the DM Tips section is just pure gold. I've been DMing for over 30 years and this still had a lot to offer in terms of advice and ideas. I'm inspired to go and play now! Volume 1 suggests there's going to be a follow up - which will be an instant purchase for me.

Fantastic resource, great value. As a DM, this is excellent to reach for when looking for dungeon details, door details... a lot of bang for your buck here. I love the Excel file. Simply hit "calculate" and voila! A fresh, interesting room description. Some of the details even trigger encounter ideas. Thanks to the creator for providing this excellent resource.

A fantastic compendium full of intriguing and varied magic items. Really looking forward to getting some of these into my game! I'm also planning on using some of these relics as ideas for adventure seeds in an upcoming campaign guide I am working on. Thanks to the creator for putting this out, and I think a Volume 2 would be a great idea at some stage.

Amazing art for DMs and creators alike. I almost don't want to tell people how good it is because I want as few people as possible to be using it! I use this stuff liberally in my products and have all of WM's art packs. Hoping he'll put out more. Top notch black and white line art. It don't get much better than this IMO. The art has a distinctive feel, reminds me a lot of FF Gamebooks. I use it in my own 5e Gamebooks. Easily worth the asking price.
