They Came From the Cyclops's Cave!
by Chris J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/15/2024 03:58:57

They Came From... has always been a fun series, but with Cyclops's Cave and [CLASSIFIED], i feel the writers really hit their stride with both the tone, and the content they were aiming at. As a lifelong fan of fantasy movies, and an early devotee of Harryhausen, this book is the game i didn't know i needed in my life, and it really nails the feeling, tone, power, and reach these movies have. The most impressive thing the writers did was cover so many varied elements of the genre, covering everything from swords and sandles, epics of the gods, Jim Henson-esque tales of wonder, knights in shining armour, Shakespearean fantasy, as well as the orc (or Orx here) and goblins that we often associate with certain brands of fantasy!

Highly recomended!

Scion is not really meant to be a horror game,so it speaks volumes of how much of a a great writer coyote crow is that she wrote such an awesome horror scion adventure

At The Gates Ashcan Edition
by Corbin [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/29/2024 19:58:39

A $5 introduction to At the Gates which includes some (but not all) the basics of the system and setting. It gives me a good snippet of what will be a game I'd love to run.

Only issue is I wish I could see what characters look like, but since this is a preview and not a finished product it just makes me hyped for when we finally get to see some artwork when the kickstarter goes live.

At The Gates Ashcan Edition

First, I just want to say I am excited with the StoryPath Ultra details. It seems like a much more streamlined version of the rules, and I like anything that takes out some more of the ambiguity while still leaving a lot of room for Storyteller flexibility.

Second, I enjoy the setting concept here. An uneasy political situation post massive attack ala Fire Nation, but with Void Magic and Demons.

I like the magic system. The Pillar/Block/Cooldowns are definitely interesting and I want to see how well they work in play.

Qessarach, an arachnid people, and void warped wolves are two examples of some great antagonist templates.

I have not run this yet. I intend to. I enjoy what's here and am looking forward to the full version.

Across the Eight Directions

This book is excellent. A mix of new locations and updated looks at old favorites, this book is just jam packed with story seeds--either as setting for character origins or for current games. Each chapter gets a gorgeous map to help keep track of everything. Great art too.

22nd Century Talent
by Travis [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/11/2024 09:05:10

This is a short but useful supplement. My only issue is the Society Paths are given one Attribute and two Skill keywords, but Society Paths in all of the published material only have three Skill keywords.

Easy to fix on your own, but the point of this is supplement is having that work already done for you.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse 20th Anniversary Edition
by Matthew H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/31/2024 04:26:06

on the whole very good, the rules are a tad awkwardly presented but the setting is interesting and character creation pretty cool. more could and should be said of lore elements but on the whole a good text.

at least to a degree. Fair warning to those new to werewolf there is a LOT of uncomfortable shit in here as an immense holdover from older editions. There is a reason W5 rebooted various setting elements. If you're not certain about whether you can handle this stuff (or aren't competent enough to just gut it) buy when it's on sale, otherwise... well you've been warned.

Changeling: The Dreaming 20th Anniversary Edition
by Matthew H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/26/2024 14:04:36

I write this as a person who had not experienced changeling before buying this edition. This is a really enjoyable game, the option to create your own kith is nice and feels really fresh, possibly opening up the doors to take the fae in many interesting directions if you so wish. The vibe is of course different from most world of darkness games but it adds some nice contrast whilst still having enough of a grim vibe to be appealing. the magic system is also surprisingly intuitive. all in all really cool check it out

Scion Second Edition Book Three: Demigod
by SJ [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/25/2024 17:49:32

The third core rulebook for Scion 2e that takes players to Demigod tier as they strive to become Gods. You need Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero to use this book, and I suspect you might need Mysteries of the World too since Demigod refers to pantheons from that book.

As always, I enjoyed the new pantheons described in this book as well as a pseudo-alliance of outcasts from other pantheons found in the appendix. The book has new antagonists to challenge Demigod characters as well as more in-depth info on Underworlds because they play a large role in apotheosis. Not sure how this content interacts with Mysteries of the World, which also describes these Underworlds. There's also a new mechanic for Goliaths (literal gigantic monsters or large-scale events/hordes like armies, elections, etc.), which is pretty interesting.

This book hammers home (with the power of Mjolnir) the poor organization of the series. There's a lot of need for cross-referencing split between three books, which is going to require a lot of to-ing and fro-ing during sessions. And it's not always clear which page of which book contains the rules you're looking for. And there is a lot of crunchiness baked into the game (which you can admittedly ignore, but that's true for a lot of TTRPGs) that would necessitate consulting the rulebooks, especially if players are used to D&D-style play.

I love Onyx's world-building and aesthetics as well as their imagination, so I hope they get better at organizing information in the future. There's something to be said for the "DM's Guide/Players' Handbook" simplicity of D&D rather than Scion's method of parsing out rules in drips and drabs. It'd be one thing if the new rules in Demigod concerned themselves solely with mechanics necessary for Demigod characters (along with cool new pantheons because I always hunger for more!), but there's plenty in here that is useful for Hero campaigns as well.

Maybe Onyx will publish an all-encompassing book much like the D&D Rules Cyclopedia.
