Curriculum Vitae: A Guide to Obscure Disciplines (Final Death Ashcan Edition)

Life is power in a dying world.

The City withers. We grow stronger.

We wield our stolen might in myriad and brutal ways.

For the Kindred, all starts and ends in a pool of blood.

Disciplines are a seductive gift: often a swift solution to a Kindred's nightly woes. They are invocations of her will and the dreadful threat of her ire. The power fantasy of vampirism and that fantasy's corrupting influence, as archetypal to unlife as drinking blood and walking in night eternal.

Disciplines are a method of control. They define the ultimate extent of each Kindred's reach and influence. When all other avenues close, the Childer of Caine may turn to their Vitae and draw forth a power that once shook Creation.

And so these sinister aspects tempt her with their ease and sting her with their price. The deeper she delves into that ancient source of sin and greatness, the darker the world around her becomes.

And the more she hungers.

Curriculum Vitae: A Guide to Obscure Disciplines is a sourcebook that reaches far into the mist-veiled expanse of Vampire: the Masquerade's past editions to uncover powers that lay dormant in the Blood, just waiting for ambitious or desperate Kindred to call upon them once more.

These pages explore a host of abandoned Disciplines, long-lost Blood Magic, and the fallen Bloodlines that wield them, providing updated mechanics in keeping with the 20th Anniversary Edition of the game as well as numerous conversions to the 5th edition rules.

The Final Death / Ashcan edition serves as a preview for the upcoming final product, and is provided as a PWYW title.

This version is stripped-down to the essentials, including over a dozen Disciplines from the 1st and 2nd edition eras and a similar number of Blood Magic Paths - each given a V20 glow-up. Many are also presented as optional Discipline powers and Amalgams for V5.

Some of these Disciplines never received complete, 5-level treatments - some never had any mechanics at all, existing only as brief notes in NPC stat-blocks or narrative devices in works of fiction. There are even a few powers converted from Vampire: the Requiem, and more will appear in the finished product.

Bare-essentials information is provided in this version for those looking to portray Kindred from these Clans and Bloodlines that once walked the World of Darkness. As with the Disciplines, some of these Bloodlines only ever received brief mentions before their concepts were abandoned. Curriculum Vitae treats these loose-threads as opportunities for new Chronicles and Stories, and the full version of the book will include complete write-ups for these Kindred (as well as V5 Loresheets).

Whether you're looking for inspiration for your own Disciplines, need a special power to challenge your experienced Players, or you're simply intrigued by what once was (and might have been) in the World of Darkness, there's plenty of updated content to sift through.

Nightmare, actually bridges a gap... Between V5 and V20.. Obfuscate (a nos discipline) and the horror behind it COULD by it's definition make "hallucinations" or "illusions"... Nightmare kinda fades the Ravnos out... Which is kinda which SHOULD be done given the "week of nightmares".. Chimeristry isn't exactly a discipline, it's more a way of USING the core disciplines... Which is exactly what nightmare kinda shows... To me, it's always been kinda a obfuscate and dominate/or presence discipline. Just "making illusionists".. Seems more DnD then "vampire"... Anyway, sorry for the late reply to this message.

I actually had an idea for another book you could sell on here pretty easily, you do an awesome job at "adapting" other systems to the V20 with this book (and I cannot wait to get the final version, I realize you've had some IRL trouble, making the delay, but I can't wait to get a hold of the finished version)... ANYWAY.... The idea is adapt the M.E.T. disciplines into V20... Necromancy alone, between the issue 1 addition and the V2.. Gives LOADS of adaptable techniques... They also have Obtenebration techniques and even rituals... (I know from my group alone, that "shadow betrayal"... has loads of potential... Everyone with Obtenebration wants a technique that can turn a target's own shadow AGAINST them, or a technique that alters those "arms of the abyss" from simple hentai tentacles to something more "menacing".. Claws, faces, tornadoes, etc).

Hey! Apologies for the radio silence. 3rd Quarter's usually when things slow down for me at my day-job, and I was hoping to use my personal time to get the finished product out the door.

Back in November my department got slammed with incoming work, highly time sensitive, very out of season, and we'll just say the headcount I have in my department made it challenging to keep up. I'm still dealing with the fallout from that and trying to function through a near-constant state of burnout.

It's no excuse, but I had to prioritize professional responsibilities over creative ones (and I hate it, God do I hate it). If it's any consolation, this isn't the only area of life where my attention's suffered. But I do want to acknowledge that you deserved a much earlier reply.

Truth be told, the Ash-can version was stripped down from the main working document (rather than serving as a springboard to it), so there's a tremendous amount of layout already done and a lot of the promised...See more

Dayjob's been crazy this month, and at this point I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get the final release out by the end of the month (NOV 2024). But progress is coming along.

In better news: I've got a new computer, and editing is much faster now. Going to set a conservative goal of second week of December. Thanks to everyone who's weighed in and offered suggestions and critiques! (100% still on board for additional suggestions - if there's a silver lining here, it's that the extra time will let me address some content people have asked for).

Have you considered doing the "nightmare" discipline in Vampire the Requiem? amd giving it the V20 makeover? That's one that I always thought would REALLY work, it's not EXACTLY "presence" but "presence" would be what a lot of NEW vamps would shooting for... Inceptors making "illusions" would be kinda obvious.. And if you combined the "ohh we are trying to make ourselves to be unnatural".. WITH "illusions are in the eye of the beholder".. then I think the discipline can be added easily... You could HONESTLY say (give a blurb about) how Inceptors got the idea for making the discipline FROM WATCHING TV. (much to elders' ire),, Just seems a good requiem transition.. Maybe I'm wrong, but "path of the soul's fear".. and "path of phobos".. (dark thaumaturgy).. both seem to do the same kinda thing don't they?.. So TAKE "presence" and turn it on it's ear.

Vampires don't NEED to call to hell to be feared... Just call...See more

So interestingly I kind of purposely avoided Nightmare for two reasons: 1 - because I figured it's probably been converted already several times, and 2 - because I included the discipline Disquiet (not really a discipline but I thought the mechanics worked really well as an example for a quick and dirty homebrew discipline), and it has a similar vibe, just super simplified.

But honestly? I'm not sure either of my reasons are good ones, and Nightmare does feel like a glaring omission, so I'll take your suggestion to heart. Also, I'm not worried about doubling up on Disciplines in a V20 environment (as powers like Velocity and Resilience show), so yeah, maybe I should XXX the bullet and include Nightmare.

Really liked this one.. Got a kick out of it. It's really kinda cool how you took a single sentence or power from a game and made them into full paths.

Very good job. I was wondering though... Should "walk the abyss" be a Thaumaturgy path or a Necromancy path? Or maybe BOTH/EITHER... It seems to have leanings toward both of them, also it maybe so useful an ability that both factions developed their own versions independently.

Thank you! I love the challenge of taking a half-formed idea, or a power that was kind of a mess back in the day, and trying to make it something useful and thematic.

I like that idea of Walk the Abyss being Necromancy as well - IIRC there are some Blood Sorcery styles that combine paths from Necromancy and Thaumaturgy (I'll have to double check), but I'm really intrigued.

In Redemption, while you can learn Thaumaturgy IIRC, you don't end up with a Tremere in the group - though you do have a Cappadocian. So while it's technically it's own Discipline in that game, an argument could be made for Necromancy.

I'm strongly considering the suggestion - there may be a Necromancy path or two from the Requiem conversions that can offer something similar, but I don't think so off the top of my head. Good side-bar material, thank you!

I'm hoping to have it out sometime in November! The pre-release was in great part a way to light the fire under myself to get it out the door.

Right now most of the disciplines/rituals are written up. The bloodlines are mostly written too. Needs some editing work, and I really hope to have the refined Discipline Creation system done by early October so I can polish and test it some more (it uses the content from Time of Thin Blood and Vampire: The Requiem 1st edition as starting points/inspiration).

Did some clean-up editing and uploaded the corrected document, so some of the formatting/spelling errors should be fixed. If you spot any more please let me know! Also added a bookmark to Rego Magica/Arcane Mastery.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
