Fragile Innocence

This is the story about a kid.

Well, alright, it's the story about a bunch of kids. Stories, really. You know the ones. A kid gets on the bus for school, and never actually gets off. Some teenagers ignore the NO SWIMMING sign at the lake, and no one ever sees them again. A ten-year-old just became the oldest instead of the only, and everyone thinks its her fault when the new baby goes missing. You hear these kinds of stories all the time. They're everywhere. People care about this stuff.

What they don't care about is the truth. Not most of 'em, anyway. At least, they don't believe the truth, and I guess that's all kind of the same thing, isn't it?

Thrown into a strange world with only their friends, a skateboard, and a loyal pet, Innocents are faced with a choice when they encounter the supernatural: do they hide away and try to forget the truth, or do they storm into the haunted house to face whatever horror lies inside?

Fragile Innocence is a complete guide for playing child protagonists within Chronicles of Darkness, with updates and expansions to the original book in which Innocents were featured, World of Darkness: Innocents. It contains:

  • Updates to systems featured in World of Darkness to make them reflect new rules and systems in Chronicles of Darkness

  • Guides on how to create characters who have less learned skills, different Breaking Points, and different starting stats than traditional characters in Chronicles of Darkness games

  • A new system for conflict resolution that appropriately reflects the struggles children often face when trying to establish themselves as someone to be listened to and believed

  • New Merits

  • A guide to creating teenagers, who are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, and can be used as supporting or staring characters in various stories

Fragile Innocence is intended to provide updated mechanics for children and teenagers in the Chronicles of Darkness Setting.  The topical essays in World of Darkness: Innocents remain useful in second edition and are not duplicated here.

What other books do i need to properly run this?

Fragile Innocents is designed to be a supplement for Chronicles of Darkness "blue book", so that's really all you need to be able to run an Innocents story with all of the correct rules. The other gamelines aren't necessary, but are always suggested and encouraged if you'd like your stories to feature vampires or other things besides ephemeral entities and blue book horrors.

This book cover child and teenager supernaturals?

There is an appendix that covers certain supernatural children, but only within gamelines that don't specifically exclude children and that began as human and not something removed from the human experience. Included are write-ups for Vampire, Changeling, Hunter, Beast, and Deviant. This appendix focuses mostly on children, because teenagers (likely) tend to vary more in their response to becoming supernatural than children do. Some of the write-ups do touch slightly on teenagers, but they're not the focus. Hopefully I've included enough between the two appendices for someone to be able to take what they need and apply it to something used at their table.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
