Given that a large part of the book is given over to avoiding being inflammatory I found it very strange that pg26 describes the Realm as being explicitly evil and a direct reflection on 3 specific empires that laid the foundations for existing nations. Why those 3 which were all very different to each other? Why only those 3 and not countless others or indeed the current US hegemony? It feels like a cheap shot.
Regardless I found the topics the book chose to include written about well and intelligently.

I'm only familiar with 1st and 2nd Edition, but I think you're confused about what this setting is.

Exalted has _always_ been based on _ancient_ times and legends, not the modern 20th century. This isn't the World of Darkness. It isn't set in the modern world at all, nor is it futuristic science fiction for that matter (except communist steampunk Autochtonia). The rest of the game never took inspiration from modern empires like the U.S. Creation is not based on the 20th century, except that female PCs are allowed to have adventures, and whatever the authors included subconsciously by accident.

The Scarlet Empire, at least in 1E and 2E, is _inspired by_ a few specific ancient empires. It is not literally Ancient Chinese and Ancient Roman people somehow merging their civilizations. It is deliberately not based on just a single historical location because it's not a poorly-written carbon-copy of a real-world place that any GM could invent with 5 minutes effort. I am not confused about the setting and the fact that we have such different viewpoints helps to prove how unfit for purpose the safety tool discussion in the book can be. It is not smoothing the waters to allow for a better game, it is inflammatory writing.
I maintain it is a good book, just that some of the advice is well-meaning but ill-advised. It’s a benefit of the fantasy genre that one person can see one comparison and another something altogether different and that shouldn’t be thrown out on the altar of allegory.

I was extremely disappointed by this product. If you feel like you need advice for safety resources, maybe this will fill your niche.

But in terms of ST tools and alternate rules, this was poorly edited and shallow on every aspect. Impressions of systems, not actual complete systems themselves. While the game line continues to hang by a thread, basic errata is not released for vague reasons, this sort of product is a insult to the fans keeping it going.

If this was free, I would be charitable and give a 4 star review. For more then 15 dollars this is an insult.

Seeing as my other post is quite critical, I would also like to add some of the good I've found in the meantime, as contrast:
I believe Chapter 3 really is going to be the one that makes of breaks the book for people like me, who are looking for mechanical fixes to the system's problems, or simply alternative rules.

First of all, Crafting seems much better.
On a quick glance It's nothing special, but it seems an easy fix you can quickly wrap your head around and implement in your games sooner rather than later. This I very much appreciate.

Lower projects don't require crafting experience (of which there is only one basic type now) and are done even if you fail the roll, but then contain some flaw.
Bigger projects require you spend crafting experience (which you collect with every roll, not at the end of the project) to finalize them.
Repairs are addressed in a simple way (same rules, half crafting experience needed).

I'm halfway through a friend's copy, so I can't tell how good the second part of the book is.
But since this first impression (if you can call half the book that) would be something I'd like to know, so here's mine:

First of all, if you don't like woke stuff, this very much isn't going to be tolerable.
While that stuff is spread all over this edition, it's never been as blatantly in your face as in this book.

It also dares tell you not to weeb off (don't use "Sensei", it's a real word, with real world meaning).
Instead, listen to asian people's experiences. That's the only real way to learn anything.
It doesn't matter that your average chinese person knows about as much about their own history as the average westerner does (Which is to say, next to nothing).
The book goes on to fun things such as examining how to remove Exalts from the game and offers the most surface level take on how to run a game for specific exalts. I've seen better in the old...See more

Post-modernism cannot exist without deconstruction. It cannot truly create only subvert and question. Which can be valid methods of analysis.
You can do that in a neutral and logical way. Yet, I usually encounter it with a deep-seated envy and dislike of everything that has gone before at the core.

With luck we might see the day when the wheel has turned once more. But it's not likely to be soon.
