Los Angeles, Pithos Opened

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the other Los Angeles 1982.  It’s a world much like ours, with history that resembles the history we know, and another history that exists right alongside it.  There exists the almost-normal-but-a-little weird, the inhuman, the otherworldly.  If you’re reading this, we’ll assume you’re fairly familiar with the Chronicles of Darkness.

Within these pages, storytellers and players come to understand the various aspects of Los Angeles in the 1980's and its countless nightmares that live among humanity.  It takes more than a torch and a gun to stay alive against the infinite horrors herein.  One must come to understand the city, to breathe with it, to hear the whispers of long kept rumors and secrets.  To “hunt” the creatures of the night you must understand the place and the histories, its people and their stories.  Of course, you'll also need tools of the trade and secrets on the nature of such creatures; you'll need to know the ins and outs of LA culture and what you might encounter when you visit an unfamiliar neighborhood.  This book has it all for you.  So don't be shy, take a look.

In here you'll find countless enemies.  But you may also find friends.  They are like you, very human, with all their failings: fragile, unhinged, afraid, desperate.  They are also some of the few willing to seek out supernatural predators: study them, shadow them, flirt with them, and yes, kill them, or at least defend others against them.  This is a setting that centers what might be mundane people who have decided to try to face the darkness together.

Los Angeles Pithos Opened is a 185 page setting book for the Chronicles of Darkness ruleset, focused on mortal hunters, but applicable for any supernatural troupe.  Included within are:

* Over 100 fully developed characters with backgrounds, descriptions, roleplaying hints, secrets, important places for them, and complete character sheets based on CoD rules.  Readers will find about vampires, werewolves, more unusual were-creatures, mages and hedge mages, fae, demons and their servants, hunters, and other even stranger beings.

* All characters are developed with unique supernatural abilities reflecting their specific rulesets (vampires, werewolves, etc.).  Suggestions are included to simplify this and make it approachable if storytellers are unfamiliar with these resources.  Templates are provided for each supernatural creature "type" while reflecting the characteristics specific to their natures and cultures.

* A fully detailed history of Los Angeles dating to pre-colonial times; and equally detailed overview of Los Angeles county and its many neighborhoods including a map and breakdown of 1980's demographics.

* Relationship maps illustrating the intrigues, alliances, vendettas, and networks of the variety of supernatural beings of the city.

* Complete guidance for a hunter chronicle set in 1980's Los Angeles with 3 fully developed stories, numerous plot hooks, theme suggestions, a chronicle timeline, and setting rules.

* Numerous setting resources on gun and drug laws in 1980's LA, historically accurate lists with appropriate statistics for cars and guns, and other tips on the culture of the day.

* Encounter tables for various circumstances and locations for storytellers to add drama, complexity, surprise, action, or fully realize gothic horror in 1980s using the Chronicles of Darkness ruleset.

I’ll be writing a longer review in the review tab. But something I wanted to let people know before purchasing this book is that despite the “Chronicle of Darkness” insignia on the front and the references to Hunter: The Vigil, this book is a write-up of the author’s homebrew, which is set in the oWoD (sometimes referred to as the “Classic” World of Darkness). The stat blocks and descriptions inside are written as if the Vampires belong to the Camarilla, Anarchs, or Sabbat and are clans that don’t exist in Requiem. Werewolves are protectors of Gaia and are up against Pentex, and Mages are fighting against the Technocracy. If you only have a very limited understanding of that setting (like myself) then you may be confused by the descriptions at stat blocks contained within.

Overall, this may not be a negative for everybody, but I don’t want anyone else to be surprised when they buy this. I also noticed that the description of this product seems to have changed since I made my purchase....See more

Doesn't this premise violate the terms of the Storyteller Vault? I thought it was against the rules to do a crossover like this?

I wouldn't think so, since all rules fit squarely in CoD, but I am looking into revising to eliminate all references to other concepts Creature templates follow CoD, as does the merits system, and even character abilities. A bit of a project, since I'm the only writer for the product, but planned in the near future.

After reviewing the nature of crossover, I see what you're saying. I temporarily took the product down to revise for all remaining references and bring it fully in line with Chronicles of Darkness. It's now up again.

Thanks for the very fair review and discussion note! I temporarily took the product down to revise for all remaining references. Took some time to bring it fully in line with Chronicles of Darkness, but it's now up again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
