100 Frailties

ADD TO WISHLIST >

There are creatures who exist beyond the ken of mortals. Creatures with the power of gods who pluck men, women and children from the world, and change them into something else. They drag them over the Thorns of the Hedge, the world between their realm and ours, and tear their souls to ribbons. Into the gaps they pour magic, and what's left is a changeling. A fae creature.

Like any fae creatures, changelings are bound to the Wyrd. It dictates the rules and balances of their lives... and as any of the Lost will tell you, the Wyrd giveth, and the Wyrd taketh away.

Because as a changeling grows in power and potency, able to invoke stronger contracts and stoke their innate abilities with glamour, the Wyrd exacts a cost from them. Because as they grow closer to the Gentry in power, they also become inflexible in some ways. There are rules they must now follow, compulsions they must bow to and dangers they must avoid. These things are frailties, and they are the weaknesses a fae creature gains in order to compensate for the power they can otherwise wield.

The following frailties are split into lesser taboos, lesser banes, greater taboos and greater banes. And while the language in many of these frailties is intended for use by changelings, these same frailties could affect any particularly powerful fae creature... including the Gentry themselves. For power always comes with a price.

Here are some sample results:

  • Hands-Free Hello: Handshakes, fist bumps and other forms of physical contact greetings are commonplace across the world. Lost who suffer from this frailty are banned from participating in such interactions, though. This can make them seem rude or standoffish, but those who recognize this as the price extracted by the Wyrd are often accommodating of those who have to operate under this particular taboo.
  • Piper's Folly: Some old customs say you should always offer a stranger a pull from your pipe in order to ensure they aren't a fae creature in disguise. While this custom doesn't affect most of the Lost (many of whom would gladly take a free hit if offered), there are still many who are harmed by tobacco smoke from pipes and cigarettes. The effects of vape packs on these Lost vary, but it seems that anything which contains aerosol nicotine will activate this frailty. Even changelings who do suffer this bane can still chew or use nicotine patches, though, which has led some Lost to theorize it's the act of taking in tainted breath, or expelling it, that is required for this bane to harm them. Especially since second-hand smoke is enough to trigger the bane, as well.
  • Dream Scorned: There are few beings who can match powerful Lost in the realm of dreams. However, there are some Lost who find themselves unwelcome in this nocturnal realm. These Lost can only affect a person's dreams if they are specifically asked to. Additionally, they may not harvest glamour from dreams, nor may they initiate dream combat (though they are allowed to defend themselves if attacked in dreams).
  • Icebound: Myths are filled with tales of bizarre beings who can only be found during times of ice and snow. Lost who suffer from this frailty are harmed by any environment that's too hot for them. Being exposed to any environment that's 70 degrees or warmer triggers this bane, and it will continue once per hour as long as the Lost remains exposed to this environment. Lost who can lower the temperature around them, whether through mortal means or mystical, can prevent this, but contracts that merely allow one to be comfortable in hot temperatures are not enough as it's the heat itself that causes the bane to fire.

Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and one is ads.

This has helped me immensely with creative roadblocks when trying to come up with Frailties for my Changeling characters, and has numerous resonant fairy tale references. Even if I'm not using one of the frailties directly as presented, it's [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
