ADD TO WISHLIST >

A Storytelling Game of Desperate Measures

You saw what you shouldn’t have, the veil pulled back from the secret world and the monsters who prowl it. You chronicled the tragedies they wrought, these monsters, and the victims upon whom they preyed. You grasped the extent of their influence and witnessed the corruption of the organizations formed to keep them in check. And you vowed to do something about it. Tonight, you act. It’s time for a Reckoning.

Features:

  • Introduces the Hunters of the World of Darkness for 5th Edition
  • Features chapters on character creation, supernatural threats, and rival organizations

File size is way too big, the .pdf isn’t compressed nearly enough. It’s double the size of even the largest game .pdfs I already know. This needs to be recompressed into a smaller file.

In this state, it’s barely readable on any of my portable devices.

Not worth its purchase price in this condition. What good is a digital book I can barely read because the pages take several seconds to load.

Just checked a copy of a friend and played with him, I'll have to wait a little longer to have 40 dollars to buy it, cause it's an amazing game!

I keep wanting to buy this, and then seeing that it's still like $40 for just a PDF. This should be a huge seller, it's a new edition for a classic World of Darkness game... but it's been out for going on six months, and it's sold less than 500 copies on DriveThru. In case anyone in charge is wondering why sales are so soft, charging such a high price for an electronic-only edition is enough to keep even hardcore fans from giving you their money.

I'll keep checking periodically to see if the price goes down enough that I can justify the purchase.

The price is probably part of it but uhh... this one wasn't real well-received.

Renegade Studios products, have been nothing but a disappointment so far.
VTM V5 is, ok...I am talking about the core books since anything past that, is nothing but atrocious.
ONyx Path products are far superior in every way and the pdf are sold at a reasonable price.
Lastly, their products are multiple and they can intertwine to the point where you could play a vampire, a mummy, a werewolf a hunter etc. All in the same group.
There is literally no comparison!
You are welcome.

That's because VtM V5 had a different team that's all been replaced. The new team basically doesn't want to make updated classic WoD so they're just doing whatever they want instead and it's... well you see Hunter and it sounds like Werewolf is going to be just as much a trainwreck.

Why is it called "5th Edition" when it's only the 4th Hunter core book written?

Technically it’s the second edition of Hunter the Reckoning. It was done for branding purposes. Those other 2 don’t count because they’re a different game line.

Because it lives in the same world as the 5th Edition of Vampire the Masquerade

Because it's part of the 5th edition Vampire: the Masquerade line.

But you knew this already.

It isn't even actually an update of Hunter: the Reckoning from Revised. It doesn't have Imbued. The name is false advertising.

That doesn't automatically make it a bad game. But they should have given a new name to a new game.

Does this game share the same lore as Vampire the Masquerade? If it is forced lore, then count me as a hard pass.

Yep. Especially the brand new lore from V5.

No. This book treats the WOD more like a blank slate. Aside from references to familiar hunter-organizations from the old WOD-lore (like Arcanum or Orpheus, for example) and references to the Second Inquisition, nothing else from V5 is being acknowledged. As far as V5-lore-bits are concerned (Beckoning, Camarilla, Anarchs, Ghouls etc.), none of it is acknowledged or hinted at in any writeup for the vampires as antagonists.

There are no loresheets in this book like in V5 and the book spends a lot of words on describing how all hunter-organizations are untrustworthy and the hunters in it are lesser versions of the kind of hunters the players play (the book calls those lesser hunters "Jobbers" because to them hunting is just a job).

Oh, so they reference the organizations that have been in other books...aka the lore of the game. But they do not use any of the established lore? Interesting.

While from a Storytellers perspective this is honestly lazy to not go into describing some of the inner politics that go into Vampire society, from some lore perspectives, it actually makes a lot of sense that they wouldn't have that in the Hunter Book, hunters barely know 5 clans in all of the Vampire clans canonically, you think they actually know about the politics and factions involved? Nope, not likely based on how the lore had gone. TBH, much like some of the WoD20 books they probably expect you to buy V5 and use it alongside in a story sense with H5 to run a chronicle.

$40 for a PDF!?
Looks like the only ones who need to do some Reckoning are Renegade Game Studios - you should Reckon that price again.

They named this game that and didn't deliver. Will not buy and I do not recommend anyone buy.

40 bucks for a <300 pages PDF is utter insanity. If you want people to stop buying your products, good job.

I read through the four chapter previews, but it's so sandboxy as to drown me in sand. Almost every statement is prefaced with a "might be", "many hunters think", "usually", "may have" or some such weasel word. On the one hand, the writing is incredibly wordy and verbose, while on the other hand not saying very much at all. Imagine sentences like "A hunter may think there are creatures that drink souls, but this might not be the truth." times a hundred.
Additionally, the lore of Hunter the Reckoning is out the window, as are the Creeds. All organized hunter organizations are termed.... orgs. "Orgs might be", "orgs may have", "orgs usually think..". Ugh. I think I read "org" a dozen times so far.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but I'm tired of remakes. Try making something fresh instead! And don't be afraid to be assertive and just write down how it is in your game world!

Reboots are fine, that's a completely different issue. But this sounds like the same empty verbosity as the Sabbat book. From what I've seen, this *game* has potential. But the writing that's coming from the WoD in-house team is terrible.

As someone who's been following this discussion from a distance, I am highly curious about acquiring this as it feels like it has potential but it requires a bit of GM divination/proverbial hatchet-work to work right. And here is also hoping that the Imbued/Orgs get their own sourcebook for those that want them.

I absolutely cannot defend the price-tag, however.

There are free pdf files on the Renegade site which beef up the page count indirectly.
My understanding is that they will also add more (as of 2022.07.30).

Other than that... I hope that they pay their writers and artists well.
What I have seen about rpg book "money per word" from other companies is pretty low.
I am willing to pay more as long as writers and artists earn more.

Would you look at that! Another Renegade PDF that is extremely overpriced. Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Still not gonna buy it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
