100 Resources and Rumors to Find on SchreckNet

When most think of the kindred they think of the ancient crypts and forgotten lairs of the old world. However, while these immortal creatures may be tethered to the past, they exist as products of the present as well. Cars, guns and even computers are used by the kindred just as surely as the swords and magic of the ancient world.

And it was the advent of the digital age that gave birth to SchreckNet.

A completely secure network created by the Nosferatu, SchreckNet was an online bastion for the insular clan of monstrous vampires. A source of community for some, and a way to share anonymous secrets for others, the network grew to a sprawling collection of file caches, document dumps, chat rooms, image boards and more as the Nos embraced modernity. Like any dark web entity, though, SchreckNet has its share of urban legends, IRC myths and whispered rumors. Some might be just speculation, but others... others are very real.

The only way to find out which is which is to log on, and see what you can find.

Using This Supplement in More Recent Additions

SchreckNet has gone through several incarnations over the various editions of Vampire: The Masquerade. In its original form it was accessible only by the Nosferatu, as that clan built the network, and they were very strict about who could log into it. In V20 the network is still used primarily by Nosferatu, but other clans may be granted some limited access to its capabilities. In the most recent editions, though, SchreckNet was compromised and shut down for being too great a liability.

If your game takes place in the post-SchreckNet parts of the setting, the rumors and resources listed here can still be used. For story considerations, however, consider the elements mentioned as fractured parts and pieces of the original SchreckNet; islands of contact or isolated locations floating somewhere in the dark web preserved by Nosferatu who continue maintaining small, secret parts of the old network. Or, for darker implications, consider that these may represent parts of SchreckNet that were unplugged or deleted, but like the kindred who first created them simply refuse to die.

Here are some sample results:

  • For those in the know, it's possible to access a service known as the Vault via SchreckNet. Representatives from this organization will take and hold on to anything a kindred needs kept safe, whether it's relics from a bygone era, ancient books and scrolls or collections of hard disk information storage. Said items will be carefully stored, unable to be retrieved by those without the necessary access information keys. A system favored by many Nosferatu who swim in particularly deep waters, the Vault is as connected as it is protected, making it a trusted service for decades... and, some say, for centuries.
  • You can find all kinds of services on SchreckNet if you know where to look. One directory in particular, titled Ashes to Ashes, has a list of phone numbers, code words and prices for freelance ghouls who specialize in making inconvenient bodies disappear. Some of these services are pricier than others, but for those who want to avoid making an embarrassing mess (particularly when they're in someone else's territory), this list can be an invaluable resource.
  • Community members in good standing on the network may be invited to use the service Twilight Holdings. This online entity is run on behalf of the Nosferatu, allowing them to hide their money, make investments and acquire financial strength without relying on the servants and stipulations of other clans. Working in a purely digital space, making money off of everything from the drug trade, to prostitution, to financing pirates and terrorists, this service has turned more than one Nos into a cell-dwelling millionaire.
  • Those who sift through the various streaming locations on SchreckNet are likely to see their share of disturbing content. Some say that if you really search, though, you'll come across a feed simply titled The Red Room. Torture streams, feeding cams and worse aren't uncommon on the network, but this one operates on a whole other level. The Red Room always boasts supernatural victims, from ghouls, to fellow kindred, to werewolves, fey and once or twice even a hunter who fell into the master's clutches. The footage broadcast from this dungeon can never be saved, so if someone wants to witness these acts of depravity they need to be logged-in at the right time in order to see events unfold with their own two eyes.
  • An obsessive Nosferatu created a massive spreadsheet simply titled Lost that can easily be found on the network. Each entry on the sheet is a missing person, and a link goes to a wiki that's been made regarding their life, and their case details. Many of these cases go back over a hundred years to the early 1800s. While these largely cold cases seem hopeless, the community has done a lot to fill in the blanks over the years. When someone has officially been uncovered, and their case closed, the entry is moved to a companion sheet appropriately titled Found where the final details are added, and the matter is resolved.

One page is the front cover, four the front matter and one is ads.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
