Tablegoth has been very gracious about my various personal internal & external disasters keeping me from doing a full review of this wonderful guide, full of great resources, that he's created for us V5 fans. While a few feats and flaws may need adjustments, he is very open to that and updating this title accordingly. I'd give the book a solid 4.75 just because there's always room to improve anything, but this is a 5.0 in the rough if you will! The merits & flaws aren't the only great things, many of the new predator types are quite innovative (I especially enjoy the "Confidant") & some disciplines are just delicious, like the Oblivion power "Abyssal Pulse" which can wreck technology just like the protagonist in "Shadows of New York" can chose to do. I reference this PDF almost every day that I create or play with character creation, and it's an absolute steal at $5.00! Please show him some love & buy a copy, I think you'll be happy you did!

Suggestion: 237MB for a 50pg PDF is... excessive. I opened it in Acrobat Pro DC, hit "Reduce File Size" and dropped it to 6.8MB with no noticeable loss in quality.

1.) Were all, or at least half, of the merits tested before converting over to this system? I think a lot of them sound interesting, but some of them seem over-priced. Example: High Humanity (3 Dots) starts you off with one extra humanity for the game. In actual play maintaining humanity 8+ is tough since one Stain turns into a 50/50 roll on one dice (Remorse test done at end of session).

2.) Why is Discipline Competence (6 Dots) so expensive? In Cult of the Blood Gods, at storyteller discretion, the Hecata bloodlines can spend 4 background dots to gain their alternate disciplines as a 4th in-clan discipline (pg. 202 CotBG). Also the 4th dot of the Low Clan Loresheet gives a player a fourth in-clan discipline: while limited to “low clans,” over half the clans were considered “low” in the dark ages that the loresheet references.

3.) Why does Unstakeable (6 Dots) exist? Protean 5 has two powers that are meant to get over the weakness of stakes and Blood Sorcery has a Level 3 ritual...See more

I encourage Storytellers and players to adjust anything they wish to fit their game better. Adjusting the cost of advantages is one of the easiest change to make and encouraged. I tried using the official material as a guideline and think it stays close to that. I am not saying this is the best way, but it feels the most in line with V5. That being said, VtM in general is hardly a game about balanced mechanics and a merit that may be 'broken' in one chronicle can be non-consequential in another. I agree with your takes and encourage you to change them to fit your games while hopefully getting some inspiration from the options at least.

To address specific examples, let's look at High Humanity. I've played games where the players were hardly concerned with Humanity scores while in others achieving the highest humanity possible was their primary ambition. This merit is less interesting in the first game, and incredibly valuable in the other.

As for the options that other clans or characters...See more

Is this basically another homebrew of people converting over all the min-max powers from previous editions?

I'm going to treat this like a genuine question for the benefit of actual good-faith customers. Nearly every discipline is original and there are no direct ports from previous editions. As stated in the description, the design philosophy revolved around creating more options so characters could be more mechanically unique rather than provide new "min-max" options to simply make deadlier kindred.

Good-faith was the qualifier to focus on here. "Bad faith is a concept in negotiation theory whereby parties pretend to reason to reach settlement, but have no intention to do so." Please examine if this applies. If not, then no offense should be taken. The question was answered.

No, many of the merits & flaws are unique to V5 rules (like "Remorseful" which helps you on remorse rolls), and many were created by TableGoth. The book also suggests capping the new merits & flaws to 7-dots so it doesn't become a major issue. It helps me make a closer representation of many character concepts I already liked. But remember, as a storyteller you can allow some things and reject others, or tweak them. The book is presented as a resource, it's not a substitute for a great ST or players, just an aid. And at just $5.00 he's made it accessible to nearly anyone! Besides, the author is very open to constructive criticism and edits and thus has my full support. Renegade would be wise to take a look at a copy before they release their player's manual later this year, IMHO!

Sorry to bother you and I'm not sure where I should put this, but on page 19 the flaws Death's Kiss and Deep Sleeper seem to be the same thing.

Is there a chance we can get any previews of the content? This sounds interesting, but I'd be reluctant to buy something without being able to see the sort of thing I'm paying for.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
