Philadelphia by Night

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Philadelphia, 1876. Domain wars in the streets. Foul beasts in the sewers. Backstabbers in the halls of Elysium.

For Jacob Shallus, ancilla Prince of Philadelphia, there is never a dull night in the City of Brotherly Love. Embraced into his seat in an act of political expediency, Jacob finds himself at the helm of a vicious undead political establishment long before his due. Surrounded by a legion of bloodthirsty Kindred, all ripping and shredding their way to their own American dreams, Jacob must balance his ambitions for the city with the frailty of his reign over the nascent Philadelphia Camarilla. Fortunately, he has a few good allies. Unfortunately, almost any of them could choose to annihilate him and seize his holdings at any time. Nonetheless, Prince Jacob pushes forward with his bold plans to put Philadelphia on the global map.

Experience the rise of Philadelphia’s Ivory Tower as your players struggle to rise within or against it. Philadelphia by Night includes a complete history of the city up to 1876, meshing real history into the World of Darkness in classic Vampire the Masquerade fashion.

This book also contains:

  • A robust geographical accounting of nineteenth century Philadelphia and how it came to be
  • A full Camarilla power structure and culture, over 35 original Kindred for your chronicles
  • 180 full color, illustrated pages with over 15 original full-page illustrations and all original book design
  • A treatment on storytelling and world building in a large city like Philadelphia
  • A complete, open ended campaign covering a critical turning point in the history of Philadelphia’s Camarilla. Help Prince Jacob shore up his rule, or turn on the Tower and join the rebellion in Herman’s Revolution!

WARNING: This book contains images some readers may find disturbing, including nudity and graphic violence. This is not a book for kids, and reader discretion is advised.

***Philadelphia by Night is V5 compatible, including character sheets, a quick and easy conversion guide, and 11 Lore Sheets! All versions include the material to play in V20 or V5.***

Hi everyone. I'm thrilled to announce that today, we crossed into Electrum. I want to sincerely thank everyone who helped us get to this point, and let you all know that I updated the full and reduced size Philadelphia by Night setting books to fix any typo or layout errors that I now of today. If anyone spots anything remaining, by all means let me know here and I will fix those, too.

Additionally, I wanted to let anybody passing through here know that this team is still together, and we're hard at work on the first major supplement for Philadelphia by Night. We're hoping to bring you a robust setting expansion and playable prelude to our World's Fair campaign by summer or fall of this year. Stay tuned, the Philadelphia by Night story is just getting started!

This is an amazing sourcebook. It's a real treat to see the big city across the river get the WoD treatment. Do your plans include a treatment of modern Philadelphia sooner or later? Thanks!

Thank you for the kind words, Daniel, and I'm glad you enjoy the book! I'm not sure we'll ever make it to modern nights with this line, but the team is hard at work (after some time away) on the campaign expansion material for this era. We'll be publish an extensive amount of gameplay material to compliment this setting and tell an epic story with what we published, here. Thanks again, and more news soon!

Hey everyone, I want to say thanks for the wonderful reception this book has had so far and for the compliments and commentary! It all helps us to improve and encourages us to do more. With that in mind, we'll be putting out a complete V5 conversion kit for this book by the end of the week. It will feature all 38 SPCs redone on custom Philly by Night V5 sheets (still fillable to edit for your games like the V20 versions), a fillable V5 Philly by Night sheet for you and your players, a quick conversion guide for adapting the few V20-specific elements in the main book, and over 10 Lore Sheets to be used in V5 or adapted as custom V20 Backgrounds. This is a substantial update offering expanded tools for players of both editions, and it will be completely free for existing owners of the book. It will also be bundled in with the original book for the same price for new buyers. Going forward, all Philadelphia by Night products from Chopping Block Media will be written and built to be compatible with both V20 and V5...See more

I'm considering a V5 adaptation guide for this specific book, and the possibility of a V5 modern nights continuation of this is an open question for now. The option to use V5 opens up tomorrow, and I wasn't expecting that to happen so close to launch. So it's possible, but I'm still thinking through the best direction for the line. If there's an appetite for it and the book does well, it's certainly something I'm thinking about.

I would also add that this book is easily adaptable to V5 as it stands. You'd need to rework the character sheets and stats/ powers, and adapt the Giovanni. Since this is a 19th century setting, it shouldn't run afoul of any of the later Hecata lore. If you run V5, I think I can say with relative confidence the rest is all playable setting, story, and characters. I even play tested an early version of it in V5 before I realized we weren't able to publish in that, and then made a shift to V20, but I didn't have any issues with playing the material in either system.

I was just coming back around to respond with more certainty to this today. There will be a V5 update in the form of an adaptation guide. Like I described before it won't be that complicated to do, but I expect it to take a few weeks while I write it up and then we're going to play with some aesthetics and artwork like we did with the V20 style. We'll put this out as a free file update, there will be no need to buy it again and I'll make mention here on this thread when we do it. I can't guarantee exactly when this will be done, I have to brush back up on V5 to be sure it's consistent with the edition and with the quality of the rest of the book, but it won't take too long! Expect V5 character sheets and a full treatment on the Giovanni. I will try, but can't promise, to also include some interesting lore sheets which I think are a terrific V5 utility. Stay tuned!

Book is great so far. Bit of a strange issue with the last part of page 49 and first part of page 50. Part of the sentence seems to be missing.

I took care of this omission, and thank you again for letting me know. The way we laid this book out and assemble it was a little unconventional, so if you spot any other inconsistencies please let me know and I'll get right on them!

Hi there, great by night book! Just wanted to let you know that the 'NPC sheets and Appendix' file doesn't open in Chrome. I tried this on 2 devices and had the same issue. It tells me to download Acrobat X or Adobe Reader X, even though I already have them installed. The file does open on my pc though. Not sure why, but thought I should flag. Thanks

It's happening because I had to use a PDF portfolio to compile the character sheets. I was going to do them without the interactivity originally, which makes them look much cleaner. You do that by saving them to jpg, but changing through formats in the process of saving them that way (PDF to JPG to PDF to make a booklet) would ruin the text. Instead, I had to leave them interactive (which is more useful anyway) but compile them as a PDF portfolio or else Acrobat would unify all the data fields and I would end up with 38 of the same sheet. From what I'm reading, neither Chrome nor Edge support portfolios. I'll edit the buy notes to reflect the need for a PDF reader.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
