The Blood Atlas: North & South Americas

The Blood Atlas series begins here with a collection of territorial maps for Vampire: The Masquerade exploring the inhabited regions of both North and South America. Take a big picture look at the Jyhad as the Camarilla, Sabbat, Anarchs, and even a few Independent Clans vie for rulership over the night. These are not perfect canonical maps, but rather a collection of intricate rumors and hazy memories of just who bleeds and feeds in each scrap of land. Focused on cities, national boundaries and state lines are dim compared to the bruised blues and blood reds of the Sects. Explore your world. Enter the Blood Atlas.

This book features the tides of war and the literal shorelines of North and South America, making it a perfect fit for the current Year of the Tide!

Features:

  • Fourteen regional maps, each at 1920x1080 pixel resolution (making this PDF rather wide!), showing the rumored regions each faction controls
  • Two continental maps (one for south and one for north), providing a big picture view of the action
  • Explanations of the shape of the Jyhad in each region
  • Your home town (if you live in America)! It will likely have a different Sect than you expected, so now you have a cool reason to argue with me on Twitter! I'm @themasquerader on there
  • PNG files for each map, perfect for zooming in, easy browsing in your file explorer, or use as a desktop background
  • High contrast color shifted versions of each map PNG, for colorblind / vision-impaired viewers

These were designed for V20 in the current time period based on the events of the metaplots of that and prior editions. Originally, I had planned to map out the whole world, but now that V5 is allowed on STV, I've begun focusing on V5 books (SFBN is selling really well and makes me want to do more city books). The thing about V5 is that although there are a few known faction changes to certain cities (Berlin, Mexico City, etc.) the Sabbat have largely abandoned their domains. The SI has cleared out Camarilla control of other territories, but much of that happened more than a decade ago. Asia and Africa are almost entirely unmentioned in V5 canon. The result is more of a blank slate, which this kind of mapping doesn't really make sense for.

I may return to the project when I have more time, but any maps I'd make would be more for the earlier editions I think.

I love the look of these maps, and I especially appreciate the inclusion of color modulated ones for visually impaired readers. I'm really curious about how you made these maps! Did you use ESRI or other GIS products or just build it all in an image editor?

Thanks!

I used screen grabs of Google Maps from a site that helps load custom color schemes for them (called SnazzyMaps) and then edited them in GIMP. (Google doesn't seem to care about copyright when it comes to small applications like this). I superimposed 3D renders of arteries over the land masses to get some basic coloring and then mostly just used Dodge/Burn tools to make more populated places darker. Then I added the colored territory sections, icons, and names. It's fun, but very time consuming, since I need to do a lot of research to make sure things fit canon! Luckily I've been playing Vampire since 1995, so I'm pretty familiar with the canon.

I've just extrapolated from what we've I've been able to find in the books. I had to make a lot of decisions arbitrarily. If it doesn't work for your game, feel free to ignore it. I figure it's better to have something to work with than nothing. ~KB

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
