Classic World of Darkness Mixed Game Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the World of Darkness!
Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the Storyteller System or this is your first foray into the World of Darkness, welcome! I hope you enjoy what I have put together here.

Unlike Exalted, the different core books of the World of Darkness were not designed to be used together. While they take place in the same setting and are all based on the same core Storyteller System, ultimately they were built as different games. But I decided not to let that stop me! If Vampires and Demons and Werewolves and Wraiths all exist in the same world, they should be able to all be part of the same adventure! To that end, I put together this massive undertaking of making all the different Classic World of Darkness games play nice with each other. The core dice system, Abilities, Virtues, Willpower, Merits and Flaws, Backgrounds, and Archetypes/Legacies have alll been consolidated so that two different supernatural types taking identical actions will be making identical rolls.

You will need the 20th Anniversary Editions of Vampire: The MasqueradeWerewolf: The ApocalypseMage: The AscensionWraith: The Oblivion; and Changeling: The Dreaming to use this book, and it also references and is compatible with Hunter: The ReckoningMummy: The Resurrection, and Demon: The Fallen.

I'm not fond of your handling of Virtues. As far as I can tell, only two existing game lines use them: Vampire and Hunter; and the only thing the two have in common is that they are both called “Virtues”.

Actually though, that's not quite true: the Hunter Player's Guide introduces rules for Bystanders, and it gives _them_ Virtues that are much more like Vampire's Virtues than Hunter's Virtues.

What I'd propose instead would be this: use the Virtues from Vampire, but with “Reason” as a possible alternative to Self-Control that's used by Imbued and Bystanders. “Conviction” goes back to being an alternative to Conscience that's used by Vampire's Paths; and what Hunter calls Conviction gets renamed as Dedication (for the Imbued) or Integrity (for Bystanders). Hunter's Virtues are now Drives. Finally, borrow a page from “Dark Ages: Inquisitor”'s Superior Virtues: Mercy cannot exceed twice your Conscience; Vision cannot exceed twice your Reason; and Zeal cannot exceed twice...See more

Thank you for your feedback! I did the Virtues the way I did because that is how Exalted does Virtues, and Exalted Virtues are the same across all the Exalt types, so they are explicitly designed to be evergreen. Also I just like them; I like their complementary flavors, and I like how they play. That being said, if you want to omit my consolidated Virtues - or any other of the consolidations in this book - and use the vanilla versions or homebrew your own, you can absolutely do that at your table!

The info for the Vampire's Generation background appears to be incorrect, blood pool and blood per turn aren't a linear progression past 8th generation.

I wasn't aware there were canon game mechanics for blood pool and blood per turn past 8th generation. If you have different information from an official source, by all means use that instead, I made this up for this book because I didn't know anything different existed.

Thank you for this! I'm going to be running a mixed game during October and this helps a lot by consolidating the character sheets!

Thank you for the time and research you have put into this title. I wanted to ask if you have actually started your attempt to collect and categorize Merits and Flaws from all of the Wod Material, and if three were any titles you needed help with?

This was only designed to cover the core lines of Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Wraith, Changeling, Mummy, Demon, and Hunter, but you could probably adapt these rules to work with other types of characters without too much difficulty.

Mummy is not a core line but I applaud your efforts.

If I recall correctly, Werewolf uses Auspices to do what other game lines use Archetypes for. So if you're giving Archetypes to werewolves, what should be done in terms of their Auspices?

You are incorrect. "Archetype" is an umbrella term encompassing "Nature" and "Demeanor" (or for Changelings, "Legacies"). Werewolves get Nature and Demeanor same as everybody else does, and their Auspices are unchanged.

It got taken down by the admins. Apparently only the Storyteller System is allowed here; conversions to other systems are not permitted. Thank you for your interest.

Did you post it elsewhere? They might let you post it in the DM guild.

I am working on a version that scrubs all the White Wolf IP and is just a genericized gothic punk modern horror thing for D&D (which you can totally still use to play WoD in D&D if you want, you just need to add the trademarked names and flavor yourself), and I'll be putting that on DMsGuild next week. I'll comment again here with a link to it once it's up, and hopefully that one won't get taken down. Finger crossed.

Sadly it also got taken down from DMsGuild. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that project now. I'll comment here again when I figure that out.

Someone in my group got this and I was looking over it; one thing I noticed is that a lot of the Mage merits/flaws aren't included, or they're included but not listed as valid for mages, since most of them ended up in Book of Secrets instead of the anniversary core book, so it might be worth looking through there and including those merits too. I admit it's unreasonable to expect you to collate all merits and flaws from every splat, but otherwise M20 doesn't really have them, and there's some precedent for including merits from side splats with the astrological ones from the WtA Player's Guide.

A couple of examples are the flaw Cast No Reflection is included on pg 82-83 of Book of Secrets, as Cast No Reflection/Cast No Shadow at 1 point for each aspect, so it might be worth changing to all or all except Mortal. Similarly, Taint of Corruption is also in Book of Secrets on pg 96.

I've never heard of the Book of Secrets, I will have to look into that. My introduction to the World of Darkness was a 1e Werewolf game, which is the only reason I was aware of the Planetary Aspect merits and flaws. I was recently made aware that that the Wraith Player's Guide also has Merits and Flaws in it that didn't make it into the x20 books for whatever reason. There are a LOT of books out there, and I would like at some point to collect and categorize Merits and Flaws from all of them, and when/if I get around to attempting that I will make sure to include Book of Secrets in the project. For now, if there is a Merit or Flaw that isn't in this collection, or is but isn't available to a splat you think it should be because it is in another book, I recommend making your argument to your Storyteller, and let them know that the author of this collection supports your request :)

Noted! In general, the majority of the merits/flaws for a given splat ended up included in 20th anniversary edition, Mage is the weird outlier because M20 got a book that was almost nothing *but* merits and flaws - most of which are generally valid for any character, which is the only real reason why I bring it up. :D

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
