These Pages Are Knives: Salamander Style

ADD TO WISHLIST >

To live is to fight, and everything that lives has its own way of staying alive. These Pages are Knives is a collection of martial arts for Exalted Third Edition, and this is the fifth installment.

Salamander Style is an art of fire, smoke, and illusion. Rather than traditional martial gear, the salamander warrior wears a cabbage-patch of clothing covered in gaudy ornaments. A stranger (being no fool) will correctly assume that these ornaments have some murderous purpose. They are tools of concealment and distraction, for casting light off a gold medallion or a blade into an opponent’s eyes, or creating patterns of light and dust that appear to be incoming attacks.

Many Salamander warriors supplement these tools with an interest in alchemy. If there’s no light, a few firecrackers thrown into the mix will keep things interesting. If there’s too much light, smoke bombs and even stranger things can be used to provide the concealment the style needs to function. The most advanced (or reckless) students of the style use jury-rigged firewands with ammunition they formulated themselves. It’s no wonder the school still has a reputation for surprises, although sometimes the surprise is that they haven’t blown themselves to bits.

If you're looking for a colorful new way to paint the battlefield red, These Pages are Knives will provide you with just the combat arts you've been looking for.

Brilliant concept and solidly realized, though there's one charm that's a bit unclear.

Burning Diamond Vanishment:
Does this clash still work as a clash? IE does it let the stylist do withering or decisive damage? Their choice? And if it doesn't or isn't, should the stylist roll their withering or their decisive attack pool?

They'll clash with a withering attack if the opponent's attack was withering, or a decisive attack if it was decisive, and do the appropriate kind of damage.

Thanks for the answer. That's unusual, though. Think that requires some clarification.

Also, would you mind explainin your thinking? Because between the simple action and that rider, the charm seems pretty niche. With mechanical transparency, your opponent(s) gets to decide what kind of attack you'll make, who your target will be and can even elect to just ignore you, making you waste your turn and your motes. Seems a bit too limited?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
