Accursed Heirs: Dhampirs

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Accursed Heirs: Dhampirs is a sourcebook for V20 building upon the rules presented in Time of Thin Blood and Beckett's Jyhad Diary that expands the role of half-vampires in the World of Darkness.

Please note: this is a fan-made title, though I've made every effort to emulate the style and quality of an official release!

Children of the Dead

Born half-shrouded in night, dhampirs shook the foundations of Kindred Society with their first infant cries. Now a new generation of demi-vampires stands in the shadow of the Ivory Tower and the fatal arc of the Sword of Caine. Some look upon the nighttime world with covetous eyes, while others burn with the promise of retribution.

Reapers of the Damned

Something stirs from the long-forgotten past. The blood of Caine thickens and settles in the Last Generations, whispering of times more ancient when other half-vampires walked the Earth as God’s punishment upon the Undead...

Accursed Heirs includes:

  • Revised and expanded rules for creating half-vampire characters, from those who serve the Kindred to those who hunt them.
  • Setting updates that bring dhampirs into the Modern Nights.
  • Guidelines for dhampirs predating the modern era, and those born of potent blood.
  • Advice for half-vampire chronicles, including stories where the Kindred acknowledge and cultivate their mortal children.
  • New rules for dhampirs – including 7 character types, 4 new Backgrounds, over 30 Merits & Flaws relevant to dhampirs, and over 20 Bloodrights: powers unique to half-vampires
Content Warning: This product touches briefly on some difficult subjects, including infant mortality and sexual violence.

Still wading through this book, but am very impressed so far. This has the look and feel of an official product, and am shocked at the quality. This is proving to be value for money, and must have taken a lot of effort to put together.

As a quick, casual thought... with the Time of Thin Blood about, we have things like the Withering happening, where the potency of Kindred Blood thinning, making them weaker Generations. In the case of Jenna Cross, she went from Ghoul to Thin Blood. But what if Thin Bloods end up weakening down? Would they end up Dhampirs?

Just a casual thought I felt i would put your way, while reading your work.

Oh, and the Netchurch report was nailed perfectly. Kudos.

Firstly, thank you for your kind critique! I hope the rest of the book holds true for you. It was a labor of love over the course of about two years - luckily I also had the benefit of an amazing editor.

Your "value for the money" comment really hits home, and thank you for saying it. Pricing honestly was a bit of a challenge: the temptation to undersell for the sake of selling more coppies was very strong, but in the end I got some very good advice from a dear friend, and priced it for the value I thought it gave. I'm so glad to hear your feedback in this regard!

Your suggestion about Thinbloods losing their generation altogether and settling into a demi-vampiric state that is essentially a dhampir is quite interesting to me: I have been collecting ideas to flesh out a follow up guide that would include some concepts I wasn't able to fit into Accursed Heirs, and I think this idea would fit well as a new Dhampir Type ("Regressed"? "Revivalists"?). A section...See more

I believe in Time of Thin Blood, it explains that thin blooded vitae cannot create ghouls. So when the withering happens, wouldn't they just stop being ghouls? Ancient ghouls would wither and age very quickly, and contemporary ghouls would jones for vitae potent enough to sustain their habit.

Actually that is a pretty cool premise for a chronicle.

I agree - there's just something really intriguing about the Withering where Ghouls and their ilk (I call them Demi-vampires) are concerned.

I also love the idea of juxtaposing the Withering with the Thickening of the Blood from Beckett's Jyhad Diary. Perhaps not all 15th gens gain blood potency as time goes in - and those who cleave closest to their humanity become even thinner blood - something more like a ghoul or dhampir.

1st Edition VTM leaned heavily into "Return to Mortality" as a character motivation. Each edition after that moved further away from that, relegating it to a myth told by golconda seekers.

But there were even statted NPCs in 1st ed products that were formerly Kindred. So it would be an interesting notion to explore.

Does the product contain rules for dhampyr children of 4th or 5th generation vampires? I would like to know because it is exactly what I need for a chronicle that I am writing. I got to the supplement looking for it so I need this information

It does indeed include dhampirs of potent blood lineage (even 4th or 5th generation)! Chapter 3: "In Media Cruor" presents a number of rules for creating dhampirs born from Kindred of more powerful blood.

Thaumaturgical rituals and Biothaumaturgical experimentation, Elder Discipline powers, Old Magic (from Dark Ages: Mage), and Infernal Pacts are all some of the ways that are presented. There is also a section on vampires of high Humanity, regardless of generation, being able to produce dhampir heirs. It's a sort of tool-kit approach, offering suggestions as to what might be needed to attain this feat (similar to how Golconda is portrayed).

This chapter also includes some guidelines on how a chronicle might play out if such potent dhampirs exist in your World of Darkness - how the Sects and factions and secret societies among Kindred and mortals may have reacted over the centuries, from whispered rumors and fearful legends to full-fledged acceptance, depending on what kind...See more

I really liked this book. But we switched to V5 recently. Is there a chance of you maybe doing a V5 version?

If not I will probably do the 'transposing' myself, but it would be great to see a new version done by you in the style and lore continuity of V5.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback! And this is an intriguing idea! I've tried to get into V5 but the game's mechanical design just doesn't really click with me, so designing in that space just isn't much fun. That said, I really like some aspects of the metaplot (the Second Inquisition).

There's something to be said for getting my ideas about Dhampirs in on the ground floor of the new edition, and I would like to take a stab at something in the V5 format. I'll mull this over! If you do have any suggestions for how to convert the mechanics, I'd be open to chat about it! You can reach me at virissang@gmail.com

Hi Thomas, thank you for bringing this to my attention: can you tell me what PDF viewer and what kind of device you're viewing with? I'll see what I can do to get this straightened out.

I've confirmed the bookmarks work properly for me on desktop in the following apps:

Adobe Acrobat (also working on Android)
Foxit Reader
Chrome (but it appears bookmarks aren't working on Android in Chrome, I'll look into this)
Firefox
Microsoft Edge
Office (on mobile)

I did notice at least one of my PDF viewing apps on mobile (Write on PDF) wasn't allowing bookmarks to function.

Thank you for the additional information, Thomas - I checked it out in Foxit PhantomPDF and as you said the bookmarks weren't populating. That should be resolved now - I've uploaded a "Fixed" version of the bookmarked edition. Let me know if this resolves the issue, and if it does I'll take down the faulty version.

Really appreciate your catching this! (Word saved the bookmark links by heading automatically, so they appeared to be working despite the bookmarks not populating in the bookmark pane)

Just noticed that it didn't save the Bookmark names correctly - I'm currently at work but I'll get those sorted out tonight and upload the correct ones. They're still functional right now, just doesn't look pretty.

Thank you! I'm really glad you liked the layout - I put a lot of time into the presentation

I used a Word template from the Vault as a great starting place. It can also be a struggle at times to get pictures to line up properly, or to get the pages to correlate correctly. I learned a lot about Word working on this project! I tried using LibreOffice at first but I just didn't have the fluency in the program to make it do what I wanted it to do.

My only real issue is that these templates seem designed for print editions, since the justification of the iron gate images are staggered on even and odd pages. That's fine if the book is being printed, but looks a little jarring on digital.

Some advice - if you need to do transparency effects, do them in a graphic editor first before adding them to the document (I learned this the hard way). The transparency feature in Word is great and really easy to use, but Acrobat doesn't play nicely with it (most other PDF readers don't seem...See more

I mistakenly bought this product believing it was official release (I was told it was an official product and linked it via DriveThruRPG rather than the STV).

Is it possible to refund the purchase? Thank you very much.

I noticed some transparency issues in Adobe Acrobat Reader (this is a known issue with Acrobat). This does not affect the readability of the document, but it currently looks much better in other PDF viewers.

I recommend viewing in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or in Foxit Reader until I can update the images with pre-rendered transparency.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
