This StarterPack is specifically designed as a scripted, training wheels product for new Storytellers and Players. It does have editing issues and errors in the character materials. Reading carefully through all documents is an absolute must. As always, Renegade pricing scheme leaves one taken advantaged of.

So I ran the adventure for three players, one of whom was unfamiliar with any edition of VTM, the other two had played previous editions of Vampire, mostly revised and Requiem by the sound of things. The players chose the Tremere pregen, the Toreador pregen, and the Malkavian pregen to play. The “adventure” is a strong railroad in that the pregen characters basically have no meaningful choices to make, and are basically handed off from one NPC vampire to another until they reunite with the sire of one of the pre-gens where they are encouraged strongly to rebel and join the anarchs. I suppose this is warranted since you play fledgling vampires but it was extremely unsatisfying to run. It felt like a long prelude that had all the hallmarks of 2e vampire modules like the Giovanni Chronicles, despite the much improved rule mechanics of 5e. If I ever get asked to run a VtM 5e one shot at a convention again I won’t use this product.

Bit of confirmation bias, possibly?

To be fair, I haven’t ran the game as you have, but on a read through I didn’t find it as railroady as your experience was. It is definitely a Prelude of sorts - as an introductory game, trying to introduce rules and concepts, it isn’t that surprising, but I found a few of the scenes quite evocative situations to present to players. I found the same with The Monsters too, although I’m more into the meat and potatoes of the full game as it stands now.

But, nevertheless, your write up is interesting. Thank you.

I'm kinda regretting my purchase. I gave it a read through, its got a skeleton of a story which provides zero agency. The PCs wake up together in a meat locker and then various NPCs lead them by the nose, having been placed in said meat locker by Second Inquisition operatives who somehow captured a bunch of fledglings from different sires (without the fledglings remembering that they were staked), the SI operatives know that vampires can feed on animal as well as human blood, and yet seem to want to test that very fact. It just seems nonsensical. One of the SI operatives is a Project Twilight FBI member of the Special Affairs Division which is a nice touch for long time VtM fans.

They evidently hired a proof reader but there are typos and missing words in every chapter of the document. I'm going to be running this scenario next weekend, but I'll probably switch things up by including a Lasombra pregen, and instead of a meat locker the PCs will wake up in a mass grave as fledgling Sabbat shovel heads...See more

I have to respectfully disagree, friend. Page 36 of the PDF has the backstory that explains some SPC motivations. I won't go into it here, as to not give anything away.

Another person who doesn't understand what 'agency' is.

Agency is not "getting my own damn way".

Not being able to make choices, being ordered around by NPCs who take over for the PCs if they don’t do what the author intended seems to lack agency. The chase scene where an elder NPC provides the PCs with fire arms, and then takes care of the pursuit vehicle with a pistol if the PCs fail to do so; was one of many scenes that rob the PCs of anything meaningful to do.

Yeah but the stated motivation for the experiment seems to fly in the face of the NPC write ups. The sample NPC antagonists seem to know more about vampires than whomever organized the experiment.

Possibly. There are seven characters provided, one for each of the main Clans, and they aren’t all meant to be used at once I think. The scenario is basically a primer for the game’s core concepts - so I think you could probably use it for any number of players - including solo. I’d have to run it/play it to determine how lethal it may be though.

Those who have read this: How long is the introductory scenario? Could it perhaps be played as a 4-hour oneshot?

It’s a symbolic seven scenes - in a linear format. Depending on the options taken by characters it could be done in 4 hours I think.

Is it possible to get all these formatted into a single file with a cover?

There are some free PDF merging software out there you can utilize. You wouldn't have a fancy cover page, unfortunately.

To give perspective to potential purchases, if it was all one document, it would be over 90 pages, and most of the sheets are handouts for the players. 1x 45 page Story Guide for the Storyteller, one or two 16 page Reference Guide's for the table for rules inquiries, the premade characters if you want to use them (three pages each, for the seven of them), and maybe the blank Relationship Map. I could see the printable SPC cards being added to the back of the Story Guide (without the pages for the card backing). I don't plan to print those, but it would make it easy to reference them as needed. There's also the two page Start Here, but there's nothing in that worth printing after you've read it once.

Well, I’d still like a cover! I could probably use my Mac to put it all together after that.

After a quick read through, I feel the cost is warranted. The story seems well put together, the premade characters have some depth but enough ambiguity to let your players freely ad lib as needed, and it also includes a blank relationship map and quick reference document (these last two should probably be released for free on the main site; they're helpful for everyone). All the documents have a high production value that is on par with the V5 core book.

As someone who doesn't have much time to prepare stories, I appreciate the PDF as it gives me ideas for my own games. I know some may not like this, but I hope to see more of these self-contained stories in the future.

Welcome to Paradox / Modiphius.
Between all the jacked up prices on game ephemera, including Vampire minis for the 1% who are playing V:tM on a grid, and now this hopelessly inflated product, I think somehow this company doesn’t really get it when it comes to V:tM.

And then we remembered that "starter pack" and "quickstart" don't necessarily mean the same thing for every company (and that there is already a FREE V5 quick start available for download...)

This "Starter Pack" is just the digital version of something that will likely end up in physical game stores just like the Shadowrun Beginner Box, the D&D Starter Box, etc...

I doubt I will play Vampire on a grid, but actually I’d be interested in have a miniature line (provided they are good). They used to have a line for Werewolf: The Apocalypse in the early White Wolf days, but it didn’t last long I think. It’s not that you need them for tactical gaming, and the Vampire rules don’t really well for this, it’s more for the visualization of the characters (or enemies). Like I say, it will depend on how good they are.

Back in the mid-90s, yes. They were put out by Ral Partha, and there was indeed a VtM line they released at the same time. I've still got some of both hanging around somewhere. WtA was always more of a combat-focused game so miniatures made sense for that game (though admittedly I never used grids while running... anything, really). VtM? Not as much. I viewed both more as belonging to the category of 'cool-merch-to-have-of-your-favourite-game,' kind of thing.

I agree. And my answer is No. For Intro scenario with no weight in lore there is no way I pay price of one third of full book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
