Fallout: Wasteland Warfare - Roleplaying Game (Expansion Book)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"Stuffed with retro-futuristic personality and some genuinely fascinating mechanics. An incredibly robust combat system and a huge range of beautiful models begging to be played with." - Drop Lowest

"Overall the Fallout Wasteland Warfare RPG looks great. My first impression is that the game does exactly what it set out to do: it allows fans of the Fallout series to experience exciting adventures in this post-apocalyptic world." Stargazers World

"This game feels very satisfying. It does exactly what it sets out to do, and delivers that delicious missing link between something like X-COM and a party-based CRPG like Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter Nights. It’s the game I’ve been wanting for a while–enough crunchy tacticalness to provide satisfaction for even the most die-hard wargamer, and yet enough nuance to let character and personal drama shine through as driving factors in the game." - Bell of Lost Souls

"Overall, the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare RPG Expansion presents a tactically interesting roleplaying game with lots of fun design elements, wrapped in the setting of a fabulous franchise. The use of cards and special dice add a nice new element to the game and offer a little something extra." The Tabletop Almanac

Do I need the war game rule book for this?

Not unless you want to play the minis game specifically but that's more about getting the tokens and such. The RPG itself is easy and fun, though you will need a special set of dice.

Cards... I hate cards.
Book... character sheet... dice.
Dice... character sheet... book.

Optional mats with minis.
That's it. Everything else on the table is just useless noise.

You can just write the card stuff on the character sheets. Q.E.D.

I’m really struggling with putting together an adventure with the meager Overseer planning resources provided in this book. I’m looking for starting character point values and how they compare with the enemies in the game, so I can properly balance encounters with enemies. I ran a session yesterday and did a rough plan of points and it was woefully unbalanced with an almost too easy win by the players.

Also, where are the Vault Dweller character archetypes?

The core box has a lot of the cards you need, however at modiphius you can download all the cards from everything. The cards for monsters are appropriately balanced vs settler types. The primary vault dwellers from the games are detailed to a degree in the core box as well. Go get all the downloadable stuff from modiphius website as it has all the game resources you need.

I'm pretty down against any system that uses proprietary dice (I'm looking at you Fantasy Flight), is there an easy way to convert the system to standard dice or adapt to a different systme?

Yes. It is easy.

1. Print this page: https://www.modiphius.com/uploads/1/4/0/6/14062642/fallout_wasteland_warfare_dice_reference_sheet_1_page.pdf
2. Use two distinct d6. One is the pip die. The other is the adder. The pip die rolls 1-6. The adder rolls 1-3 = +0 and 4-6 = +6. Roll them together. The result will evenly roll 1-12. Then consult the printed page. Q.E.D.

The dice system does a pretty good job of representing the effect vats has on the game, I can see why they chose to go this route.

Is this missing equipment cards and costs? The rules mention buying gear with caps during character generation, but I can't see any way to do so?

Hi,

The list of caps costs for equipment is on page 94. The Fallout: Wasteland Warfare RPG uses cards from the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare miniatures game for all the stats and effects, as well the same dice. (The RPG is an expansion for the miniatures game but only needs to dice and cards to be played so can be played on its own.) If you don't have the miniatures game, all the equipment and Unit cards are downloadable from the Modiphius web site. Players that only want to play the RPG and want physical cards without buying the miniatures game can buy dice separately already, and will be able to buy decks containing all the cards from the miniatures game separately very soon. Future expansions will include all the cards in separate decks too so all the new content can be used in both the miniatures game and RPG.

What are the playable archetypes for characters like?
Reply
Customer avatar
James S July 03, 2019 4:37 pm UTC
The archetypes are a diverse mix as you may expect. Each has a different mixtures of skills on their cards as well as attribute values, plus each archetype also gets a mix of starting expertise skills like Track, Persuade, Notice, etc. Each is a starting point for a character so there's lots of room to grow the character in whatever direction you wish as you gain experience. Specific archetypes range from Bandit to Fixer, Chem Maker to Researcher, Pilot to Technician, and there are also a Mr Handy and two Super Mutant archetypes too.

The sidebar says it uses the 2d20 system, but I was under the impression that it uses a variant of the tabletop rules,

Can anyone provide any clarity?

Yes. The 2d20 system also from Modiphius is slated for next year. The "Wasteland Warfare" R.P.G. is really an expansion of the wargame. The standalone R/P/G/ for next year is the 2d20.

We do provide a guide to converting from normal dice but it wouldn't be as easy. The Fallout Wasteland Warfare dice give you a range of results from damage or successes, to special effects and bonuses.

Cheers Chris, the Fallout fan in our group tracked down that sheet and we agreed the time lost in translation would be catastrophic, plus he'd have to buy a bucket of different coloured d12 anyway, so it wouldn't be any cheaper. He bought the book anyway for the pics and the lore, but he'll be rifling the games closet for another system.

You actually only need one set of dice as we designed it to be enough :-) They're £12-£15 in retail / so around $15 or so if that helps.

Do we have to have the wargaming miniature set in order to use this? Or can it be played like your standard TTRPG (D&D, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, etc.?)

Nicholas J July 01, 2019 3:28 pm UTC
No, although the special dice are really useful. Strictly speaking you can play this game along with a bunch of free PDF downloads from the Modiphius site, so you will have all the cards (characters, NPCs, gear etc) and there's even a conversion chart for using standard D20s and D12s to represent the skill and special dice.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
