The Thousand Sanctioned Beasts — Solars

Creation is filled with more strange creatures than any man could ever hope to catalogue in a single lifetime. For better or for worse, the author of The Thousand Sanctioned Beasts may not die until he has catalogued them all.

We return with the fourth installment in our series of bestiaries for Exalted Third Edition. The Thousand Sanctioned Beasts is a game-focused guide to creatures, with the primary aim of making it easy for Storytellers to construct encounters (or for players to summon). Remember how we used to have the Monster Manual? Yeah! Like that!

This installment focuses on the Solar Exalted, and presents nine Solar templates that you can apply to whatever Lawgiver in your story suddenly needs to appear in a fight. Each is set up to be usable on their own, but can be combined into a larger encounter with each other or with other kinds of backup. And this book has instructions on exactly how to do that! If you need to fight a Solar, just grab one of these sets of stats and go.

The Thousand Sanctioned Beasts: aiming to present you with all the NPC stats you need to enjoy Exalted without having to break any pencils or weep because your players destroyed all opposition in one turn again, since 2018.

Isn't $10 too much for a 13-page pdf?

Seems as much to me. Is there a reason it's so pricey for the amount of content?

I wished to turn a profit commensurate with the amount of time and effort I spent on writing, layout, and paying for the cover illustration.

I fully respect your ownership and your right to set the price at whatever level you choose. I will, however, say two things:

1) Since the marginal cost of additional digital units should be close to zero for you, your return on the work on these products is a simple factor of the price per unit and the number of units you sell.

2) I haven't and don't intend to, at least right now, purchase them at this price point. I might change my mind and decide they are worth it to me at that price, but...

I say that respectfully, and as someone who currently has 4875 items in my drivethrurpg library. I mention that, only because, I imagine it makes me one of the more prolific purchasers here, and if I won't buy it then I suspect others won't either. But, I could be wrong, and I'm not in your shoes.

Writing the comment above bothered me: I wondered if I was being unfair. Maybe this product was worth the price? So, I purchased it to see. Having done so, I can say that it is not a product that I, personally, consider to be worth the $10 cover price.

I'm still not changing it.

I'll give my alternative perspective on this thread: I think this book (and the rest of the Thousand Sanctioned Beasts series) is really quite worth it. It's going to save me hours and hours of prep time while making my game so much better. This is not only because the QCs are really well designed, but because it's going to make me a better and faster designer of adversaries, since the series shares a lot of tips on why certain design choices were made, how to adjust, and how to mix and match adversaries as well as their features and powers and charms to produce the kinds of play experiences you're trying to create as a Storyteller. I'd pay well over $10 for anything in this series, I've already bought all the other ones, and I will buy any more that come out.

I really appreciate your perspective, and hearing you say that has motivated me to finally get serious about finishing the next book in the series: Lunars, and to give it some additional modular stuff.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
