The Darkness Owns: The Lupines

Vampire 1e's Werewolves, Updated for Vampire: the Masquerade Anniversary Edition!

“We spend a lot of time telling ourselves that we are at the very top of the food chain.  Humanity lords over the world and we lord over them.  Simple.  Humans have no natural predators, save us… assuming we can call ourselves ‘natural.’  It is a very comfortable spot at the very top. It is soothing to think that we are our own worst enemies.

It is not true, of course.  There is another level for which we serve as the prey."

It is a well known truism within Kindred coteries; only the mad or desperate travel outside of the city.  Outside is where the Lupines live.  Outside is where the Kindred are weak and vulnerable.  The Lupines hunt the Kindred, and are damn good at it.  Better to just take a flight if you really must travel between cities.

...but sometimes the Kindred have to travel beyond the city's cacoon of concrete, glass, and steel.  It is at those times they know real fear.

Return to a time when Werewolves were Terrifying

The Darkness Owns: The Lupines features:

  • A new look at an old enemy from the Kindred's viewpoint - these aren't the Garou,
  • Written by an Ennie-winning veteran White Wolf and Vampire freelancer,
  • New rules! Everything the Storyteller needs to introduce the Lupines into a chronicle is within this book,
  • New legends and setting background for all versions of V:tM,
  • Example characters and packs to make it easy for Storytellers,
  • Writers' and editor's notes that discuss design decisions.

Werewolves, not Garou

Note: This is a Black Dog imprint -- that means mature themes inside.

This book was written with the purpose of bringing back the Lupines as the ultimate danger that lies on the outskirts of the city presented in the first edition of Vampire. In order to do that the author distances the Lupines from the more familiar vi [...]

When White Wolf decided to take the Lupines, terrifying monsters lurking outside the cities, from Vampire the Masquerade and created the Garou, savage protectors of the Earth, for Werewolf the Apocalypse they ended up creating something entirely differ [...]

Excellent stuff! A briliant starting concept - and an excellent execution, which shows a remakable understanding of the original Vampire - The Masquerade setting / worldview as well as of the relevant game mechanics. By de-emphasising the all-encompas [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
