Liminal

ADD TO WISHLIST >

There’s more to the world than most of us know. Academic wizards and gutter mages, vampires and werewolves, Men in Black working for a secret religious order and a police division investigating Fortean crimes. The cities and the very landscape encompass haunted places and lost bubbles of history, faerie courts and places of power.

But you know. You’re at the edge of the Hidden World. Maybe you’ve seen it and can’t ignore it. Maybe you’re from the Hidden World, but with ties to humanity.

Liminal is a self-contained tabletop roleplaying game about those on the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin.

The players portray Liminals - those who stand between the mortal and magical realms, with ties to each. Examples of Liminals include:

  • A magician who acts as a warden to protect unaware mortals from supernatural menaces;
  • Someone of mysterious birth who is perhaps half Fae. In any case they are caught up in Faerie politics whether they like it or not;
  • A burglar who steals supernatural relics;
  • A werewolf who still has many ties to ordinary people;
  • A dhampir, striving to do good despite their vampiric infection;
  • A mortal detective who knows some of the real strangeness out there.

The magical world has a basis in British and Irish folklore and legends, along with ghost stories and modern day popular takes on the supernatural in fiction. Inspirations from fiction include the "real world" fantasy novels of Ben Aaranovitch, Jim Butcher, Emma Bull, Susanna Clarke, Harry Connolly, Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman, Benedict Jacka, and Helene Wecker.

This is an A5 sized book/PDF comprised of 286 pages.

Really a great product. Hope you ll develop a campaign for it !
Only one thing is really missing in the book is a chapter about magic artefacts (more than just the ones associated with character creation). Enchantment magic could be quite interesting to (giving the "gadgeeter" side on a tricky magician).
Any chance these stuffs would be considered in future developments ?

Is this just a setting, or a new rule set as well?

Sounds interesting but I really dislike one-column layout. No one really does it anymore, was there a specific reason do choose it over two-column? Is there a complete campaign planned for this game?

Actually, this format makes for a great reading using a single hand while riding public means of transportation.

Note: I am an owner of both of PDF and color version. The PDF is surprisingly hard to read on my mobile due to column width to font-size ratio. The book on the other hand works mighty fine.

This book is digest sized, roughly 6x9". Single-column layout is optimum for a book this size. Two column layout would look cramped.

Thanks everyone- yes, the single column layout is down to a digest-sized book. There are lots of single adventures planned, and eventually a campaign. Two of the adventures are available already- Prodigal Son and The Haunting House- and the Haunting House works well as a sequel to Prodigal Son.

Thanks for the info. Savage Worlds books are also digest sized (or something similar) and the two-column layout works really well there. This is a personal preference for me, so others might not care. Great that there is a campaign planned, I'll get interested in RPG systems usually once there are campaigns for them.

I really dislike two column layout, especially in a digest-sized book. I'm glad they went with single column.

Quick question: The PoD is listed as a B&W book. Does this mean that the entire book will be B&W, or is this just denoting the paper/color quality?

Wanted to check before I finalize a review for the site I write for so I have the facts (and so I know for myself for when I grace the gorgeous art of this book onto my physical shelves in the future!)

If it says B+W then it will be black and white printing.

FYI there was a color POD version available, I’ve ordered it myself, but it’s now not being offered.

Groovy. The currently listed PoD is the Black and White version. A physical colour version will be available around the end of this month from Modiphius directly, with whom we now have a distribution arrangement. It's already available from a few game stores- Leisure Games (London), Patriot Games (Sheffield), and Fan Boy 3 (Manchester).

Thanks for the heads up! I know a few people that have "color" products but the book is only B&W, so I wanted to be sure.

I'm based in the USA, so I tend to have to wait a bit for Modiphius titles (my FLGS doesn't carry much/any of their books), but if I love this as much as I do right now by the time I get to the end, I'll have to budget that in soon enough. :)

Hopefully my review will be written, edited, and live within a week or so!

Yep - the POD and B/W is right around the corner. We're still in the proofing stage and prepping for the hardcover and eventual retail. I can't get into specifics but I know Paul is looking into a few things that are really exciting for this whole project, now and onward. I know he plans on making an announcement soon when things are a little more certain. Thank you for your question and interest.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
