Bordeaux by Night - Players Guide is part of a two book project by Secrets of the Masquerade.

  • The Players Guide contains all the geographical details about the city and larger domain of Bordeaux, its praxis, the public known opinions of the NPCs about each other and so on. It's an introduction to France and to Bordeaux as a city, and Bordeaux as a domain, foreigner-friendly.
  • The Storytellers Guide contains the true history of the city, important events ever since the domain was established, the true opinions about each other, all sorts of other supernatural critters, each character's background and how they perceived certain events, and obviously, story leads and starters for a one shot or for a campaign. Misinformation, hidden details, betrayals, lies as big as houses and as tiny as just a last name change, all create unique plot hooks that the PCs are in stellar positions to navigate.

This book overall is edition neutral, but its lore is closer to Revised era books (gangrel leaving the Camarilla...) while its feel and ambiance is 1st or 2nd edition (Behind closed doors personal and political horror). The heavily modified layout is 2nd edition.

Blood and wine come in many flavors

Known for its wine and architecture, Bordeaux hides many facets in its cellars. Open this player guide for Bordeaux and read about the city that was English due to a 12th century divorce and marriage, a city that traded metals and slaves, a city with high technology and world-renowned institutes, a city of patrimony, collaborators and resistants, of the precursors of the Enlightenment ideas and of fierce rivalries with Paris.  And the biggest European sand dune.

Bordeaux by Night includes:

  • An overview of the general and local history and geography;
  • Maps and other visual aids;
  • A small crash course on Just French Things;
  • What is known about notable characters and their coterie charts;
  • A character index, references and further sources;
  • And a special Mr Gone character sheet!

This is a very well-done book. It provides a lot of historical and cultural context of Bordeaux and convincingly sets the developments of Kindred society in the history of the city. The Camarilla society itself is well-thought out and detailed. Together with the Storyteller's Guide (which is also very good) the book outlines a complex network of relationships (past and present) between players in the city that players can interact with and influence in various ways.
I recommend it both for running games set in Bordeaux and for inspiration for these set in other cities.

I just had to buy this book, since profits made from the sale will be donated to the reconstruction of Notre-Dame de Paris. You have a noble heart, good sir! My next chronicle will take place in Bordeaux.

thank you! I hope you'll enjoy it :) The funds will be donated to the patrimony directly, more precisely to the stonecutters (artisans) public schools, which will be required to recreate the dome, the spire, etc. These artisans are very specialized, very few, and I'm sure they'll need to recruit new apprentices for the decades long project ahead. Stone conservation has been somewhat forgotten, this is a wake up call we, as a society of patrimony and heritage, need to heed (plenty of art historians and conservators have complained about this issue that's why I think targetting my little help towards training to acquire those very needed skillsets...)

In transparency:
With the sales from all my books in April, I made a 198€ check for the conservation and patrimony safekeepings efforts :)
In France such donations can be deducted from taxes, but because I don’t pay income taxes (I’m below the threshold), it doesn’t apply to me.

I hope you enjoyed the book! Please leave a review when you’re done reading it :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
