Cleveland by Night

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Cleveland By Night is an introductory setting and sandbox campaign for Vampire: the Maquerade 20th Anniversary Edition. Cleveland, OH is a city that's overlooked by mortals because it's not big enough to attract much attention and not central enough to anything to be necessary. In Kindred circles, Cleveland has become a place that's been blacklisted by everyone because no news comes out of the city that isn't a lie. No sect claims control, and no sect wants to. What's actually going on in Cleveland is a small reflection of the chaos and interaction between sects, locked into county borders,

Every resident of Cleveland is hiding their true identity, and doesn't want to be found out. Some are hiding from a blood hunt, others are learning to infiltrate sects. Each vampire here knows that each other vampire is hiding something, and taking notes, waiting until someone slips up enough to be exposed.

Inside are tools and suggestions to help new players learn about VtM's complex political structures by playing with all of them in a single city. This doesn't mean the players will be overwhelmed, as the city's residents often are running on minimal info themselves, and doing their best to fake their position. Experienced players will enjoy being able to pick out the clues and hints on who an NPC is and what they really know, and playing less commonly found clans and bloodlines.

New Storytellers will find some helpful content on how to run a game driven by the player's choices while keeping them connected to bigger things happening in the city. Experienced STs will appreciate ways to keep planning and paperwork minimized in gameplay, and being able to use all the clans and sects at once during a campaign.

OK, this one is a little misleading. This really isn't a 'by night' book. Most of the things present in that type of work, both in the original presentations and other newer storyteller works that I've seen, give you a setting to run. This includes NPCs, most often with stat blocks, the politics of the city, plots, storylines, the history of the city, and some locations of interest. Often it included an introductory adventure.

That's not this work, which is what I believe the author means by the term sandbox. This is a basic overview of the city at the sect level. Not a single NPC, plot, or location to be found.

Pros: There's some good advice on storytelling for new to moderately experienced storytellers, including one bit that's very relevant, estimating stat blocks for NPCs on the fly. Most experienced STs do this, though it's more difficult for new players.

There's a basic gazeteer of the city, based on neighborhoods. There's a few locations mentioned,...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
