Becoming A Monster

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Months have passed since the incident in Gentilly, and Emma has settled into a routine with the vampires she surrounds herself with. Under David's orders, she is being instructed in the various skills necessary for survival in a world of darkness.

But trouble is still brewing on the horizon. The seneschal of New Orleans, Marie D'Richet, is still out to get David, and when a juicy little morsel like a human, weak and frail, struts in front of her, she strikes. David, sensing disturbances in his everyday-unlife, preparese himself for the worst. And Emma, being surrounded by monsters and being taught their skills, is starting to change. Can she stay on a somewhat right path, or is she doomed... to becoming a monster herself?

Direct sequel to the novel "The Modern Nights", and a more in-depth look into what is going on inside the heads of monsters, and a monster-in-training.

Author’s Note: This is a long one, so strap in, boys and girls. TL;DR at the bottom.

I’ve been writing small bits of fiction since I hit the early teens, and I kept a bunch of small documents with these stories, bits that I wasn’t sure where to put or what to do with, and indistinct ideas. The Modern Nights series was a work-in-progress since I was fourteen (14) years old, having stumbled across Vampire: The Masquerade at age twelve (12). Not exactly a member of the target demographic, but as a disaffected, bullied, and otherwise mentally and emotionally abused and immature youth suffering from an undiscovered neurological disability, I was hooked from the word “vampire”.

As I began writing, I was in a time of my life where my own experiences desensitised me to others’ pain and suffering, and compounded with my disability, I lost my capacity for sympathy and emotional empathy (as opposed to intellectual empathy, as I could still clinically comprehend others’ situations, but not relate to them or feel for the suffering) entirely. As a result, my views on topics which were considered harsh or grim were very blasé, with a distinct lack of care or interest in treating these subject matters with the degree of respect and – for lack of a better term in my non-native English vocabulary – reverence they deserved.

Having reflected on the early part of my life, I steadfastly believe that had it not been for fear of the justice system, I would have turned to murder. And had I not had just enough friendly connections, caring family members – and had an acquaintance not survived my own planned spot and method – I might very well have ended my own life before I even became an adult.

When the Storytellers Vault was announced, I was sixteen (16) years old and had just finally escaped the more abusive elements of my youth by switching schools, and had begun surrounding myself with people who cared about me and treated me kindly, spoke to me gently, and welcomed me into their social circles with open arms. When it launched shortly after I turned seventeen (17), I hastily threw together what I could from my five years of writing, polished it up a bit, and put it out there with no regard for the subject matter, my recent experiences, nor the experiences that were yet to come in my emotional development.

At eighteen (18), a psychologist told me I was autistic, and after almost five years of trouble with education, employment, working on my emotional wellbeing, and a recent house-purchase, a psychiatrist diagnosed me with infantile autism shortly after I turned twenty-three (23) this March. Since I turned fifteen (15), my mental and emotional states have been developing immensely after I left my negativity behind me and made dear – and, I suspect – lifelong friends.

As hard as it is for me to write and publish this very message, it is not to ask that you get these stories out of pity or sympathy, nor that it should get you to write good reviews (I know you’d be lying), to to hopefully provide context for the blatant disrespect with which I treated serious issues like r*pe, abuse, violence, etc., and that you keep this in mind if you read: “This writer was a kid, who had no real life experience, and who poured his hurt onto a page to try and feel better about himself.” I write this message and once again make my novels available to the Vault (for free, this time) because I read an article on High Level Games’ website (https://www.highlevelgames.ca/blog/5-reasons-to-write-for-storytellers-vault) about writing for The Vault, and point number four (nr. 4) was about novels. The third of the four examples chosen was my very first, rather bad attempt at a novel, titled The Modern Nights. As they rightly pointed out, I was a fanfiction writer, and still (very inconsistently) am to this day.

It is with the push I got from this article that I decided to make all my novels available for all the criticism they could draw, but I hope you keep this Author’s Note in mind if you ever decide to check any of them out. To the article’s author, Josh Heath, I would just like to say:

Thank you for being such a voice on the Storytellers Vault, and thank you for writing this article all the way back in 2017. You couldn’t have known what impact such a seemingly trivial article meant to raise Vault activity could have had on a wannabe-author all these years later, but I am thankful for it, and honoured that my name appeared alongside yours in The Longest Night (organised by Ben Allsop and Sam Myatt). I love Werewolf: The Podcast, I love your appearances on Mage: The Podcast, and I have queued-up OpCast to listen to next.

TL;DR: I went through sh*t, posted sh*t, took down said sh*t, and have gone through enough sh*t to repost the sh*t for everyone to judge, because I’m smort as sh*t.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
