Set the board. Begin the game.

Pieces by Ryan Chaddock is a guide to crafting interesting NPCs suitable for life at court in your campaign setting. It’s an expansion on the existing NPC details tables provided in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, customizing the content for the kinds of manipulative power players that find themselves drawn to the halls of power. Some are virtuous, most have something to hide, these are the fascinating characters that will make your court adventure or campaign come alive.

Here you’ll find each of the tables in the DMG made bigger and/or better suited to the web of deceit and lust one finds at court. You’ll see that each of the tables is at least as big as it was, if not bigger and always customized to the setting at hand. We’ve even provided a d100 table for Flaws and Secrets, including 100 unique entries.

Whether you’re scribbling up the rulers of a small barony, designing the central government of your long-running campaign, or just need to flesh out the royal palace of a newly discovered land, you’ll find useful entries and food for thought here.

This PDF is layed out in landscape format of 11x8.5in, for easier viewing on wide screen monitors.

One thing I like about this product is that it is concise, does exactly what it needs to. I'm a huge fan of the range or tables available, and there is a clear understanding of what makes political intrigue interesting! The 100 flaws and secrets was pa [...]

I own several of the products Ryan Chaddock created for Numenera and I am a fan of his work but this is a rare miss for me. It's just a document full of tables barely strung together by the theme. All in all, I don't feel this product achieved its goal [...]

Very useful set of traits and flaws and whatnot for creating NPCs. You could tweak this pretty easily to fit other types of intrigue, too... [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
