Hunter vs WerewolfYou’ve stumbled into shadows.

You know what lurks in darkness.

There are more monsters tonight than ever before.

It’s time to fight back.

Hunter: The Vigil Second Edition is a standalone game that can be played by new or existing players. The lore has been updated to not only reflect the uptick in monsters, but also the fact that hunting monsters is not exclusive to a location, group of people, or time period. There may be more monsters than ever before, but now there are more ways to fight them, too.

In Hunter: The Vigil, anyone can be a hunter — provided you are committed to the hunt. It is a game of personal horror and sacrifice that tests relationships and encourages teamwork within a cell, compact, or conspiracy.

Hunter: The Vigil Second Edition includes:

Hunter presents a core set of rules and three options for gameplay for new or existing players. This game includes:

  • Overview of a hunter’s world and lore, the types of hunters you can play, and three separate tiers of gameplay.
  • Six compacts and six conspiracies with Endowments for tiered play.
  • Character creation, rules to hunt, equipment, Tilts, and Conditions.
  • Monster creation and locations where to hunt the strange and unexplained.
  • The Slasher Chronicle, Storyteller advice, and more!

Remade

You woke up…different. Someone changed you; on a slab, an operating table, an altar. By luck or by fate, you escaped. Now you’re hunted by the ones who made you, and they hold all the cards but one: they don’t know that a fire burns within you because of what they did. They don’t know that you’re hunting them.

Broken

The Divergence stripped you of your humanity, cracked open your soul. Its wounds will never heal. You are Broken — not like a toy lying in a limp pile on the floor but like a glass bottle, all sharp edges and jagged, cutting shards. Anyone who comes close to you bleeds — your enemies, but also your few friends.

Renegades

Though alienated from humanity, you are not alone. Other Deviants have suffered as you have suffered. They hate the conspiracies that made you as much as you do. Together, you will stand against them. Together, you will make them pay!

The new compacts are interesting, but nothing to write home about. SWORN and Nine Stars are very region specific, and while Nine Stars could be easily refluffed for any major police department, SWORN is a bit of an issue. While the idea of an informal alliance between native groups in the US focused around hunting monsters preying on them and recovering knowledge lost to time regarding these entities is sound, the background lore is very direct and specific which I feel is a detriment. Again, mileage may vary in your chronicle, but it's far more restrictive background wise than a compact should be in my opinion.

Council of Bones is great though, really nails the idea of a ghost hunter conspiracy well. You can throw them in as allies or antagonists to any Geist with minimal issues.

Would you suggest this to someone if they were planning to get it?

I would, mostly because there's nothing horrible in it, the compact/creation rules are good, and it fully updates hunter to 2e. It's worth it if you're a fan of Hunter, or want to get someone new into Chronicles - Hunter is an excellent way to introduce people to the ruleset and the universe.

Is any of the compacts or conspiracies of the 1st edition removed from this one?

In the interactive character sheet, when you try to fill dots the PDF uses V's to mark the points instead of dots for some reason.

This is visually annoying and makes it harder to tell the ratings, as well as just looking bad.
Same with Deviant character sheets and I think the new Mummy as well.

Favorite, been waiting for this! Now, just to wait the industry standard year for all errata to be found, fixed, and incorporated before ordering the print.

As far as I know there won't be any updates anymore. OPP didn't update any of the other books afterwards, so I don't think this one will be an exception.

Does anyone know about the print quality of the hard copies? Do premium color books have the gloss paper like the older World of Darkness books?

They're not glossy. There premium print paper is a heavier weight, so the ink takes better.

I'm still new to WoD and only started after GMC, so I haven't read any Hunter 1e books, but are there no stereotypes for all the compacts and conspiracies?

This Wiki has a fairly solid summary of the compacts and conspiracies.
https://whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Hunter:_The_Vigil

Basically the tiers are: Street. You're unaffiliated and know nothing.
Compact: you're part of a larger, country wide association of like minded hunters
Conspiracy: you're part of an international group with access to powers that blur the lines been human and monster

I'm sorry. To clarify I had already purchased it (and like it) and I was just curious why none of the compacts or conspiracies had stereotype sections like other gamelines have for their splats. I wasn't sure if this was also the case in 1e or there was a reason they were not in 2e or if I just skipped it over by accident.

I can verify that 1e *does* have stereotypes, although they're not comprehensive. Each of the compacts and conspiracies has stereotypes for two compacts and two conspiracies (other than themselves, of course). It *is* well-balanced, though: I did a tally and found that each group is represented four times.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
