It’s a big afterlife. What are you going to do in it?

Handbook for the Recently Deceased is a guide for those who are new to the Underworld - players, Shadowguides, and Storytellers alike. It offers advice on how to handle new players, new wraiths, and new chronicles, all with an eye towards the inexperienced at being restless dead.

From the first words of the Shadow, to the first Harrowing, to the first time a player asks, “What do we do now?” the Handbook has the answers. Let it be your guide to the Underworld as you set foot in the Shadowlands for what could be the first time.

Handbook for the Recently Deceased includes:

  • Chronicle ideas for campaigns featuring new wraiths — and new players.
  • Advice on handling first Catharsis and first Harrowings.
  • Helpful hints and suggestions for players just starting out in the world of Wraith: The Oblivion.

The abandoned lover, waiting for her paramour to return, only to die, alone. Now she waits in her house forever.

The murdered family, killed in a spree so violent their spirits couldn’t pass on to the hereafter, now wreaking an untampered revenge on anyone they find.

The serial killer, who never made his tally complete in life, now determined to possess the bodies of the living to continue his gruesome campaign.

These ghosts, and more, haunt our world. They watch us, they torment us, they play with us, they find themselves locked in Sisyphean cycles, where the only respite comes through the haunting of the living.

It is our role to hunt these spirits down. Some believe we’re laying them to a deserved rest. Others hunt for the renown and to put down the homicidal dead. Others believe they’re doing God’s work, or with every hunt, their knowledge of the paranormal world increases.

We are ghost hunters, and regardless of our motives, it is our task to ensure the dead may no longer torture the living.

Having followed Wraith: The Oblivion since first edition, this is an excellent primer for a new Player or Storyteller to get the basic concepts down for the game without burdening anyone with statistics, charts, or calculations. The three key chapters are for the Player, then the Shadow (run by Players), and the Storyteller, each summarizing and offering seeds on how to generate and manage a Chronicle. It is only 43 pages long, so can easily be read as a PDF compared to longer books. Honestly, the only thing that could add to this introduction would be bullet points in the text to point the Players and Storytellers to additional books for more clarification on the basics laid out here.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
