Chronicles of Darkness: The Contagion Chronicle

The world is ill. You have everything to lose through its sickness.

Loss. Change. Chaos.

Your own blood will rebel against you. Your own herd.

Your own loved ones. Do not believe that just because you’ve had a hundred years on this earth, you’ll be exempt. Just because you were ignorant of it until now does not make you immune. Your waking to the reality of this world — of the great machine in its heart, and the sickness in its veins — is just the first step. You must find others like you and me and make them swear to drive back this Contagion. This world doesn’t have long left. You may be a monster, but perhaps with other monsters, you can drive back the destruction of everything.

The Contagion Chronicle includes:

  • The first Chronicles of Darkness book to provide guidance on playing creatures of all kinds in a shared story.
  • Systems and powers enabling teams of vampires, werewolves, mages, Prometheans, changelings, Sin-Eaters, hunters, mummies, Beasts, demons, and Deviants all in the same group, encouraging you to explore all permutations of crossover.
  • A new mythos — the terrifying Contagion — acting as a catalyst for unifying disparate monsters into allied groups known as the Sworn and the False.
  • Over ten settings from diverse locations all around the globe, each wracked with its own Contagion, and all waiting to be explored.

Bah, I bought this thing hoping for rules to help run a somewhat balanced crossover game. Some way to lighten the workload. I've been going through some effort to try and retool and homebrew a personal variant of the setting, leaving out the gamelines that haven't worked out for me (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and Beast) and putting more focus towards the ones that have (Changeling, Promethean, Hunter, Geist, Demon), and I was sincerely hoping this book would help me with that task.
*sigh*
Nope. This has utterly failed to help me run crossover games. It's offered some additional rules to push for mixed parties, but does absolutely nothing to make the mixed parties gel better and be less of a headache for the entire table.

Also, I've /already/ set up the God-Machine as the closest thing to a BBEG in my setting, a blight on the landscape that's destroying and remaking the world. I don't need to give it cooties, too.

I think what Onyx Path needs to understand is that what made many of us players like the Chronicle of Darkness more than the old World of Darkness is the freedom we had on the first edition where there was no meta-plot. And every supplement book was filled with nice new mechanics and powers for us to try out.
Now they have spent A LOT OF TIME promising a book to help us to play a crossover but when it comes to the mechanics for it, it is just embarrassing. The book is full of story and lore that if you are like me and want to create your own instead of following whatever metaplot they make, it's useless.

that's not really a bad thing. if you already have something then why fix something that isn't broken? for me, this book is great because while I have a growing setting, this gives me ideas and I have already committed to a crossover game before this book dropped yet it gives me ideas! its nothing wrong with exploring different ideas. much like Hurt Locker and the other supplemental books, they're supplemental for a reason: it's optional, and this book definitely falls under it's optional, if you got something going, awesome, if you need some extra help or something official, this will work too and expand on it. it gives you a foundation, and there is nothing wrong with that. power to you for having your own rules and such, not too many storytellers have the creativity nor patience to make a crossover game work and fun! =)

It's a campaign setting book, of course it's going to include story and lore -- that's the point. If you want to specifically play a chronicle using the Contagion, this is the book you want to get, just like if you want to play a Vampire game in New Orleans you'll want that book, or a Mage game in Boston. I think you went into this expecting something that it wasn't really intended to be.

"Systems and powers enabling teams of vampires, werewolves, mages, Prometheans, changelings, Sin-Eaters, hunters, mummies, Beasts, demons, and Deviants all in the same group, encouraging you to explore all permutations of crossover."

Is at the very least misleading if it doesn't offer mechanics to improve crossover play.

I've heard that they are about to release a Player's Handbook for the contagion with rules for crossovers. That might be something I'm excited about because it's what I was waiting for. It sounds more like what they have been promising with the contagion chronicles.
What I said above comes from a place of frustration with the majority of supplements we are getting for the second edition of the Chronicles of Darkness. I miss books like Mirrors, Armory and Armory Reloaded, Inferno, etc. Books that give some hints of stories that we can play while using them, but they are more descriptive and focused on mechanics. I also got extremely frustrated with the Dark Eras book because I was expecting a set of rules to play a medieval game, also something to help me to storytell a massive war like the historic ones... Maybe even a bit of fantasy like mirrors used to have and then... What I got with the Dark eras was a book where the new merits and powers are all over the place and there is a lot of things that sound...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
